Hi everyone, I wanted to ask a couple of questions. How long does the public school have to get back to you after you have sent your letter of intent to homeschool?? Is there a time limit? And what grading scale do some of you use and where do you get it? Thanks Lynne

Depends on the state. If you sent it registered...I wouldn't worry too much about it as the school either has no staff or very little right now.

I use the standard 90-100 = A and so on scale. Depending on the problem/work depends on how many points I give it.

Questions on grading had just been asked about, here is a link if you'd like to read it.

In our state we are not required to send a letter of intent. Also being that it's summer, maybe they really aren't in any hurry to respond to it, if that is what they are supposed to do.

Once we turn our form we never hear again from them until it's time for a review. At that time we get a card in the mail telling us the date and time and a number to call if that time or date won't work.

We just go in to the office, sign our names to a form and that's it. We don't have to wait for verification, it's just done with that.

On another thread I put the grading scale I use. I forget which thread it was  ........it's a different one than Nellie has up there. It's the 93-100 scale.

We don't hear back. I didn't hear anything from them until the middle of May when they sent me a "sweet" little letter reminding me of my portfolio being due, and offering to educate my son in the coming schoolyear.. ummm no thanks! We have to send in a notorized affidavit by July 31st stating that we are homeschooling, then by June 30th we have to send in our portfolio to "prove" we did work and he gained knowledge. They have to return the portfolio to us.. and they better mail it, I spent 10 bucks to mail it to them across town, they better do the same I hate dealing with them as they dislike homeschoolers ALOT!

Grading we do a 93-100 scale as well. That seems to be what all of the schools are using now, and not that I want to be like them, I do want Garrett to be able to relate to his friends when they ask what grade he got on such and such a subject.

Where do you live? It totally depends on your state and how on top of your paperwork the homeschooling person is. We have a homeschooling liasion and she is not on top of it at all. Last year's was. They have 10 days here. But check your laws carefully bc here, if they don't respond w/i 10 days, you don't have to send squat for the rest of the year. Still have to keep the records, but don't have to send them in. ;-)

You're really nice. I NEVER talk to the Board of Ed and I send things exactly when they're due. . .not a minute sooner. I don't want to make their jobs easy! ;-)

They have 14 days to get back to you and notify you as to whether or not it is accepted according to this: http://www.hslda.org/laws/analysis/Ohio.pdf

I highly recommend using HSLDA's info. . .they do have the best and most accurate information on hsing laws out there.

You, Know I really was trying to be nice because I didn't want to burn my bridges. The Lord was opening all the doors and that is how I felt I should respond. I told the school to try to save them hours on IEP's. Afterwards they were not to kind but I figure that is their problem. I will go to that web. Thanks Lynne

LOL I totally understand. It's funny bc they know me from being a support group leader. I have helped numerous mommies navigate the very complicated law where we live (read that to mean I've spent lots of time arguing with them over what they can and cannot ask for). Anyways, they're never nice to me. Professional. . .but not nice. LOL I think they may even be a little scared!
