Im in IL and I have never had to GIVE anyone an official BC to keep. they feel for the seal then make a photo copy. I would never hand over my official BC to anyone for keeps. They are more then welcome to make a copy. The DMV will not keep it they will just check to make sure it has the seal.
I would have it notarized. My dh has an embosser. It is an engineering seal. I wonder how closely they look at the seal?
I think it is unfair that they won't accept a homeschool transcript, but I would go ahead and get the official copy anyway. He will need it eventually. I managed to get my drivers license in CT at age 16, go to college, take my nursing boards, all without an official copy of my birth certificate. But when I turned 40, and moved to NJ, I had to go back and get the official copy, in order to get a NJ. It seems that post 9/11 everyone is much more picky. There is no reason why anyone should be keeping the OBC. They can make a copy if they need to, but they should not be keeping it.
I know I have had to fork them over before for school and I believe when we were applying for some help for ds's Tourette's. That is why I asked at the DMV if they would just look at it and give it back. I'm still hoping against hope to find an extra copy in my filing cabinet. Sommer, I guarantee my problem with not having the extra $10 to blow is greater than the problem you have with me not having it. We'll make it happen...I just won't buy milk that week. To whomever was wondering about the "proof" of age that transcripts provide, the student's date of birth is included on the transcript. Because the school has verified through a birth certficate the legitimacy of the date of birth, the DMV will take it. Again, the trouble lies in the fact that Illinois law gives the same credibility to me as they do to any other private school. Private schools do not need to be accredited by anyone. Even if they were, accreditation only verifies the coursework, not the credibility of the person issuing the diploma and transcripts. And a side issue for me is that the school, who has verified his DOB through his birth certficate on file, is not wiling to issue him any official documentation that he has taken a course, which was the DMV's original suggestion as the preferred method. Sooooooooo.....it seems like more of a policy issue where the practicality--and even legality--of the policies in the various state agencies need to line up with each other. Jackie, I had to leave a message at HSLDA and have not heard back yet. I told them that we would be getting the birth certficate so ds would have a smooth day of it. It was suggested by a few friends to make HSLDA aware of the discrepency.
Ugh. I don't know what I'll do if I ever lose our DD Birth Cert. She was born on a Naval Base in Japan. We had to go to the embassy in order to get her a passport, and a Birth Cert. They told us that if we ever lost it, it would be quite the process to get another one. Have you checked out your local craft stores for an embosser? Also, some craft stores will do simple stuff like that for you, if you ask. (There may be a small fee).
You know, Rachael says she didn't need her birth certificate because she had a passport from her mission trip to Jamaica last summer. They accepted that instead.
No, I have not checked on that, thanks! However, if I think I may invest in an embosser so I can charge my kids $20 bucks each time they need a copy throughout their lives.
Just found this one at Office Depot site: http://www.officedepot.com/catalog/...ber=12&Ntk=all&Ntx=mode+matchpartialmax&Nty=1 Click on Customize - choose font, size, center image - $28.49
I thought all states required a birth cert. for every license or renewal now? I had to have one the last time I renewed in TN and when we moved to TX. I am surprised that they keep the official copy. Mine was given back to me in both states after it was verified. Though I understand your frustration at the difference, I also understand why they won't take a homeschool transcript as proof of age. Too many people out there WILL lie. Can you just wait a bit longer until you can budget in the cost of a birth certificate? (Can you hold the kiddo back any longer?)
The DMV won't keep the birth certificate, but our school did when ds went to ps for a couple years. The DMV's recommended form of ID was the transcript and they offered the birth certificate idea secondary to the transcript. I completely understand the birth certificate as proof. The issue I have is one of our state's policy double standard. Make everyone show their birth certificate and then there is no longer a problem. But the state can't pass laws that clearly state homeschools ARE private schools and then not allow them the same credibility. It's like saying there is no more segregation allowed, but that color of people still need to use that drinking fountain over there just in case they have cooties. Maybe a poor analogy, but it is difficult finding scenerios that correlate with homeschooling delimas.
Not here, dh renewed his last month and all we needed was the old drivers license and our car registration to prove his address. Pay $20 and be done for the next few years. Forgot to add we can still renew by mail here also.
