    Hello!

Does anyone here use How Great Thou ART? Do you like it?

My 8 1/2 year old son is so good at drawing, I really want to encourage him to develop this talent. Dh is also very good at drawing, so ds must get it from him! I can barely draw a stick figure! LOL

Anyway, dh would love to teach our son, but he'd like something to kind of give him an idea of what to teach first, etc.

    TIA!

    Blessings,

We just started having fun with Mark Kistler's Draw Squad. We also use Artistic Pursuits.

    BTW ds is 7.5

Now...they love the Draw Squad!! The things are real boyish and he makes them easy to draw. He breaks things up into type (foreshortening, etc...)

Artistic Pursuits is more what I consider "art culture". You know how to use different media and looking at art but...not really any "how to".

How Great Thou Art is absolutly fabulous. The creator of the program comes to our homeschool group once a year for a 3-4 day lesson program. He sells all his curriculm in the back of the room and everybody including the children love it. It is something almost any age can do. He starts at the basics and works on up.
I recommend it. You will enjoy it and so will your children.

I just bought Jeannie something called Draw Write Now. It is put together by units, and I got her the volumes on Columbus and Native Americans.

You read about the subjects, you write a little bit, and you draw from the examples they give. I believe this series would be way too easy for your son, though.

I don't know Becky. I use those books still w/ dd (9) and ds(5). They both like them and they make drawing a great picture easy. Now, the handwriting part is easy, but I don't do that anymore with dd. I love Draw Write Now!

I have not used art curriculuim to this point but have found that the Library has tons of "how to draw...." just about anyhthing books! My kids love artwork in drawing, Clay creations ( we use the real stuff not just playdoh, but even play doh will harden for keeping purposes), we do drawing and painting and such in grade school style but then I have had a lot of art classes myself to teach a little stuff with. My mom is an artist herself and sculpted for all of my younger years if she was not oil painting she was sculpting! She got me my first set of real water color ( tubed kind) paints when I was about 8 or 9 so that is really a great age to get started!
I purchased a book on how to paint with Acrylics as well for my children this year. I hope that someone in my family can do something artsy in thier job some day. My youngest is into creating so he may become an archetech some day ( hes turning 9 in two weeks!)
My oldest is into comic type drawings and creating characters with clay to match them, he wants to be a computor game designer, artist or something of that sort.
My dd designs her own paper dolls and thier clothes.
So who knows where that will lead!
All this is to day Do something, if you can't get the How great though art, watch pbs' art guy, or go to your library and get a how to draw paint etc, book for your kids!
Art is a great way to express your feelings, hopes, dreams and just plain fun!

Ok it wont let me post the website  but I have a website for wonderful FREE art lesons. They are even grade leveled from K-12. I have used it for 2 years and have participated in some of the projects with my boys. Daniel (14) and Matthew (10). They are lots of fun and you dont need to go and buy a lot of things either. I AM VERY FRUGAL!

If you want the website, email me personally at kdself@lowcountry.com
