Well, almost, it's only Thursday So far we are LOVING it! We are using the BJU harddrive kit and it is turning out to be perfect for us. My son loves the extras that he wouldn't get in class (like a video of a real volcano erupting when they are studying volcanoes) and he likes scheduling his own breaks between "classes". And I like still being able to get some work done while he's watching the videos. The stress level is practically nil compared to his PS days! On the inevitable subject of the "S" word, I had an interesting conversation with my mother yesterday. She has been pretty supportive in general of the homeschooling but still had some concerns about socialization. Sigh. So I kind of let her have it. I brought up the fact that when I was growing up, we lived way out in the boonies and my friend was my dog. We played in the woods or the fields and I read a lot. I had one friend in PS. Then in 8th grade we switched to a very small Christian school...10 kids in my entire grade. I had one friend throughout highschool and she lived so far away that visits were few and far between. My socialization was youth group at church. I reminded her that I left that insulated little world and went to college, joined the Air Force, eventually became a mom and am active in church, a local plant club (I was president for 2 years) and became the church secretary. Brody already gets more "socialization" from neighborhood friends, church activities, and tae kwon do class twice a week than I ever had while growing up, and how did she think I turned out? Silence. "Hmmm, I hadn't actually thought of it that way". I think I finally scored one against mom
I'm dreading what my mom's going to say. Parents just have to let go, just like if our kids choose to send their kids to PS.
AAACK! Don't say that! J/K. I bet it is hard when your child chooses something radically different from how you raised them.
I'm so glad things are working out well for you. I get the guilt trip thing from my mom all the time. Not about hsing but other things. Mostly how big of a dissapointment I am. Oh well, that is another story. Are you taking pictures of "school" activities? They are so fun to look back on.
What level is your son at? Curious Also - I have a mom like that <sigh>..... my poor DH usually hears most of it after she leaves and keeps bugging me to stand up to her so he doesn't have to hear it. I just figure it's not worth it anymore and let it go (so far it's because the kids version of Beowolf is on my 3rd graders reading list) Way to go with the BJU thing!! I know I looked at it!!
I am glad he is liking it so much, that always makes things so much easier. I hope the rest of the year is filled with the same joy.
My son just started 5th grade so he's old enough to be fairly independent as far as changing classes and getting around on the computer. To be fair, my mom has been pretty supportive of us homeschooling. I honestly think that even the well-meaning folks have been influenced more than they know by the psychology of our society today.
