So, what do y'all do for PE/Gym? We just bought the Wii Fit and we are going to have our kids do 15 to 30 minutes a day on it. Since we are in Hawaii, they do play outside a lot but this will be "fun" exercise for them to do each day. In the winter months it rains EVERY day and sometimes for DAYS and DAYS so this will be good for days like that also. Anyway, I didn't mean to write I book I was just wondering what y'all were doing with your kiddos.
My oldest really likes tennis and swimming. This will be her PE. I also have kid yoga videos and we all have jump ropes (it's still DD and I who jump). When hubby is home, we ride bikes. Next summer everyone will be riding bikes We have also talked about him going on runs with DD. She will be 9 when he comes home.
Bill takes Jake (9) running sometimes also. Last weekend he took him to climb ropes. Jake always has a good time. Nikki
I am so not a PE-person... But my hubby is, and he is planning on dragging us all on bike rides and hikes in the mountains after we move. So that will be our PE, I guess. Ds is not big on team sports anyway.
My first and last children play soccer, the older one also refs. During the summer, we bike ride as a family on Friday mornings. My middle one also rides horses (she use to dance). Add to that swimming (though not as often as I'd like!), semi-organized homeschool pick-up baseball games on Thursday, and just general running around being a kid, I don't worry about it!
During the "school" year, a local homeschool group runs a 2 hour gym time twice a month at a local church. During this time, the kids play soccer, dodgeball, color tag, etc. On our own, we hike, take bike rides, and swim. Once in a while, my son will run with me. My kids are also in softball and baseball in spring and early summer. I think the point of "PE" should be to find and develop healthy lifestyle activities that the kids can continue to pursue as adults. Carol
My son has been dying to take martial arts lessons so a month ago or so we started him on Tae Kwon Do. He goes twice a week, gets lots of excersise (it's a very child-oriented place, they run them ragged), learns some discipline and has made a good friend who also homeschools. Bonus for me is his friend's mother and I turn out to have lots in common too We also have a pool so during the warm months he gets lots of excersise that way too. During the winter we all work out together on work out machine in the family room a couple of times a week.
We are quite a sporty family, so mine do sport every day, dd1 has swimming lessons, horse riding lessons, trampolining lessons, homeschool pe group and her bike, walking, trampoline in the garden, climbing frame, basketball hoop, tennis set, criket set. so mine do sport everyday and i feel that is a real advantage to homeschooling, the children can do as much as they like, (here it feels like it takes over!!!).
My boys attend a Homeschoolers Academy so they have gym class once a week during the school year (they also get art, music, and drama there). We ride horses as a family at least twice a week, they work on the farm (it is definitely exercise), and swim any time they are at Granny's (and it's warm enough, of course).
My boys have been in Tae Kwon Do for the past 2.5 years. They also do basketball, baseball, soccer and football through various city organizations. My DD just started dance and she will be doing cheerleading, basketball and baseball this coming year. She may do Tae Kwon Do as well... but I am not so sure she really wants to do it. I think her brothers are talking her into it. Our HS group actually had a PE day last year that we attended. But this year, they have their whole schedule mixed up with other classes. So we won't be attending this year
Our homeschool group contracts with a coach to come out once a week and have a PE class. This year they're trying to have a karate class too which I'm really excited about! Amy
Our homeschool group has a gym day and a swim day once a month for two hours each. And in the winter the kids play outside alot. They both love to sled and play in the snow. DS is very interested in learning to snowboard and I thinking about that for this coming winter. DD is planning taking a dance class.
Ballet is the main thing. We are debating about starting her up in a martial art. Ems doesn't really want to do it but Handsome is thinking of having her do it for one year. If she honestly can't stand it, then we will remove her. We also play tennis at the park, stretch, and just play sports.
We use Wii Fit and Wii Sport over the summer months here. At the moment kids don't go out to play until 5.30pm, but haven't done even that for the past week, as the humidity is horrible at the moment. As for the warm months, kids swim (not lessons), and in winter (the nicest months here IMO), kids run around, ride bikes, play basketball in park etc. Back in Oz, DS did a form of karate, and DD did netball.
Sd walks on the treadmill and does Karate (when it fits in the schedule) Our co-op has gym once a week for younger kids that dd will probably go to. There are also alot of programs through our town and through the local homeschool groups. We will try various things and see what dd likes best. We have been doing gymnastics but for the summer switched to dance which she loves. I think we will continue dance for next year and go from there.
Jeannie does gym once a week, karate once a week, a gym-like, group games class ( kickball, etc) once a week, and swimming once a week.
I am a PE Person, we have in the past done lessons in sports and gone to play them. I am a sportsy person so that helps. THis year I offered my services as a PE coach for Homeschoolers, I am sending out a flyer in AUgust and hoping I get some takers! I am not sure if I will take payments for the class or not though, I just know I need the groups for stuff like Volley Ball, and Basket ball, and Soccer. Skills re great but you need groups for them We have also joined sports in Spring, used to have gymnastics in Fall and whatever else we could find. This fall they want Soccer if we can get the city league to have it. but if I get the hs PE group then I will do that as well.
We belong to a HS group that has PE class on Mondays, and both boys are playing softball this fall. We like to try to swim when we can during the summer, and they ride their bikes every day that it's nice out. DH likes to take them biking at a nearby park when he's off work. He also does "Army style" discipline with them sometimes when they act up: they have to give him 10 push ups, or sit ups, or whatever. It really helps them work their anger out! It's funny when we're doing school because 9 times out of 10, they'll ask to do PE first. Mean old mama always makes them do a little bookwork first.
