We need a new pencil sharpener. any suggestions? I am pretty frustrated with the electric ones we've had. I think I am going to get the old fashioned crank kind. no?

I was thinking about this very thing last night! I want the wall-mounted, metal, crank-style pencil sharpener. I'll be watching this thread to see what suggestions you get.

We have an x-acto KS and it works great, I got it on amazon. (it's an old fashioned crank kind and the kids love that)

I got one of the hand-crank kind that has a lever-action suction cup on the bottom, because I don't have anywhere handy I can put screws into anything. Ehhh.

When I was a kid, I had one that had a sort of clamp that would grab the pencil and pull it in to the sharpener, while you held it down to the desk with one hand and cranked with the other. It could also sharpen different sizes of pencils. WISH I had one like that again!

At school, I have concrete block walls and metal desks and formica-topped desks. Truly NO place to attach a pencil sharpener.

I have two electric ones, maybe Boston brand? Got them at WalMart. One I've been using for 12 years, the other about 6. If we have good Ticonderoga pencils, they still work pretty good - as long as we keep them cleaned out. We have to use little hand-held sharpeners for color pencils, though, because the electric ones just eat them.

We need one too. The cheap little plastic ones are driving me insane. I plan on getting the old fashioned crank kind. All of the reviews I read about electric ones are not very positive.

After having gone through umpteen pencil sharpeners (crank, battery, and electric) I have finally found the ONE! It is the iPoint evolution. I got it at Costco and we have had it for quite some time with no problems. It is by far the best one we have used. I think it runs around $20, but I got it on sale for $15ish.

I don't know the brand we got. It was part of a package I won at a homeschool meeting. It was a character with a sharpener. The character is long gone, but the sharpener works wonderful.

Yes and no. Yes it looks like that one but the link is to a battery operated one and mine is electric. My sil bought the battery operated one because I told her which one I got and she hated it. Then she used mine and was super impressed. She now has the electric one and loves it. I don't ever recommend a battery operated one because they crap out and don't fully work.

Walmart has the crank ones that suction right to the table/desk. These have been sharpening much better for us than the electric/battery ones. I think they cost about $7, but may be going on sale for Back to School. We have 2 red ones and a blue one.

Batmanswife, that one works remarkably like the one I had when I was a kid, only the outsides have been redesigned. Mine looked very much like the familiar old kind with a sort of oval-shaped tank for the shavings, and it had a bigger base. But works like it!

BeckyG, I have one of those from WalMart, but the suction works best on a really slick hard surface, and not on the table where I have to put it. >pout<

I like how the "thing" comes out that you put the pencil through....which kind of holds the pencil on its own and then pulls it in by itself as you crank it.

We have an electric and a hand crank. The electric is an Xacto plug in. We've had it two years and as long as we are faithful to empty the cup, no issues. The hand crank is in our basement...so the kids hate using it.....I've asked hubby to move it upstairs a million times....you know how that goes! Ha ha ha ha!!!

I just bought that very one, and the only way I can get it to stick is to pour a small puddle of water on the counter first! Other than that, I have been pretty happy with it, especially after going through several battery powered ones.
