So we've decided that it is time to invest in an electric pencil sharpener. I would love recommendations on ones that you have used and love.

We've had THIS one for 4 years now with no issues (as long as we remember to empty it!).

My husband had to take it apart once b/c the filings got stuck in in the blade b/c we'd forgotten to empty it. Now emptying it is a weekly chore so it never gets full again. :)

I have an X-Acto similar to the one Krista linked. I've had it about a year. I tend to agree with Sommer. They are all junk, but the poor quality pencils that are available don't help. The cheap pencils just don't sharpen well. If I had a good place to put a manual sharpener, I'd just go that route.

This past summer a gal at the WTM site gave a review of a Classroom Friendly sharpener. Here's her review at her blog. Just scroll down a bit until you see the sharpener. She has a little video too. I think it's a neat sharpener....and I like the cool colors.

I have a $20 xacto I got from Walmart, we've had it for 3-4 years, not problems at all.

One thing I did learn--after having a few electric sharpeners break: Those cute pencils with fur, shiny coatings, etc. are terrible for sharpeners. I no longer purchase anything but plain pencils, and if we acquire the cutesy ones-they don't go in the sharpener.

Ahhhhh cutsie pencils. Ok we have never used fur ones, but we buy those cheap crappy printed dollar tree pencils all the time. My problem has never been with the pencils as much as the electric sharpeners crapping out.

Same here. We have an electric Panasonic I got at a garage sale. It still works awesome. It's got this light that goes on when the pencil is sharpened. Love it!

Here's my guess: your electric pencil sharpeners are crapping out because you are using them to sharpen those cheap crappy printed dollar tree pencils.

Hey....somebody had to say it. ;)

ETA: but seriously, I'm sure that has something to do with it. I won't use those kind in our Panasonic because it causes it to jam up or something.

We had one we got at Costco that crapped out on us after 3ish years (I think it was the ipoint) so I went back to Costco bought another one and it died after sharpening 2 pencils. So back it went. I have yet to find and electric one I love, although my parents have one from the early 80's and it is still working and does a great job. I just ordered a manual one off Amazon. Hopefully it will work well.

ETA: the cheap pencils aren't allowed in my sharpeners either. We have small handheld manual ones for those.

AHH the dread of the pencil sharpeners! I have yet to find one that I liked. I want an old fashioned real metal one that spent 30 years in a school and still worked. I thought I had bought one but it was a flimsy copy. AHHH Not to mention the terrible cheap pencils. AHHH So instead my 4 year old son backs his little dump truck under the sharpener and cranks around and around and around until all the colored pencils are the length of my pinkie toe. Only to cry in desperation as it still has a funky one side not sharpened point on the end. But finds delight in the truck bed full of pretty piles of new made "dirt"

We've have an xacto hand crank sharpener mounted on the wall for a couple years that works great. I mounted it at about my eye level so the kids can't mess with it...lol I have a young son that thinks it is funny to sharpen the eraser side. And we only use Ticonderoga and USA Gold natural pencils.
