We have 3 bunnies, 1 guinea pig and a hamster. We are in search of another domesticated critter, besides a dog or cat. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks!

I'll second the rat. They are very clean creatures and extremely social though I would advise getting a male rat as they tend to be a bit calmer than the female ones.

Thanks! My daughter likes rats. Are the iguana and gecko easy to hold? I think I might be scared if they run away alot. I mentioned these to my boys and they like the idea though...

    Any more?

I don't know about geckos but I've had iguanas and the only problem with them that I've found is that you have to be sure to get them from a reputable place....please don't buy pet store iguanas...You never know what their diet has been and if an iguana is fed meat of any kind it will become a biter and be impossible to hold.

Fish are fun to watch. Both my kids got small tanks, they have to feed them morning and night and keep the tank clean. My daughter got some guppies and they had babys she was so thrilled. My son loved them so much for his birthday we updated it and got him a bigger tank.

We have had a three iguanas all purchased from the pet stores and never had a problem with any of them. I like the fish idea. They're easy.

I hold the iguana all the time. The only problem is, is that they like to be up high so they are constantly trying to get on your head. The older they get the more mellow they become.

How about a snake or a gecko?
We have a Mexican Black Kingsnake and an African fat-tailed Gecko. Both of them are great pets.
The gecko is easy to hold, he doesn't try to run away.
The snake is getting faster, but when he was smaller he didn't move too fast either.

Thanks for your suggestions. This evening we bought 1 more guinea pig ( now we have a male and a female) and 2 Robo Dwarf hamsters.

We are thinking about a gecko for Christmas. But right now, with the guinea pigs, we'll definitely have our hands full after they mate. I might even have to change my user name.:)

    Thanks again!

I recommend geckos too. We have a leopard gecko (we did have two, but one died) They are a lot of fun, and Rex (our gecko) is very attentive to what goes on around him. My kids have no trouble handling him. (just make sure they wash up after, they can carry salmonella) They are very low-maintenence too.

I am terrified of geckos!! I would never have a rat either. It is interesting to see the likes and dislikes of others.

I did have a snake once and it was pretty neat.

    Thanks for the Gecko, tip.

MonkeyMama, WOW - you're brave! We had 2 snakes before. I was always terrified of them; and my hubby eventually gave them away.

Interesting, because they are both rodents. Did you have a bad 'run in' with mice before ????

Aurie = not a reptile person or rodent person AT ALL ;)

How about a bird? Parakeets are relatively cheap and the males can be taught to talk (with alot of coaching). We used to have one. She was very sweet and I loved to listen to her chirp, especially in the morning.

My sister has 2 parakeets. They make me nervous when they are outside the cage. And I think they would be too demanding. I don't know ...
