The Savoy Company, the world’s oldest amateur theater company dedicated to the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, wants to give you a chance to experience some of Philadelphia’s finest live theatre…for free! We’re giving away 20 free tickets for our performance of The Yeomen of the Guard at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, PA, on May 27th, 2006, to the winner of this year’s essay contest.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s works were often described as being “topsy-turvy.” Although rarely used today, the term described the manner in which the duo’s seemingly pedestrian plots would veer into fanciful and fantastical states of utter disorder – as if reality itself had been turned upside down!

For this year’s essay contest, we’re asking you to write about a time in your life that was “topsy-turvy.” You could write about a humorous coincidence, a case of mistaken identity, a time when things were not as they seemed…be creative and let your imagination be your guide!

Simply send your answer, in 300 words or less, to yeomencompetition@yahoo.com, along with your name, phone number, age, school (or school district, if you’re home-schooled), and teacher’s name (or parent/tutor’s name if you’re home-schooled).

Contest open only to students aged 18 and younger. Only one entry per student, please. All entries are due by Wednesday, May 10th, 2006 at 11:59 PM. The winner will be selected by the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Savoy’s Education Committee, and the winner will be informed by phone and e-mail no later than Friday, May 12th, at 8PM Eastern Standard Time.

Good luck – and we look forward to seeing you at the Academy!
