We use Explode the Code. My son(9 in Oct) is now in the #3 book. It is the 5th book in the series. He has really begun to read well . It has been a good choice for us. I have added things early when he is reading (like telling him wh, sh, ch) before he actually got to them in his book. They are in the 3 book though, so they do progress well. We do 3 pages a day unless it takes one more to complete a lesson that is usually 10 pages.
My dd6 is in the 1 1/2 book. She really enjoys them and is actually progressing on her own. She loves books so I think she is trying really hard to learn to read on her own.
I have never looked at the Spectrum Phonics.

We are using ETC this year.

WE used Horizons K last year and got bogged down and abandoned it finally. We resorted to 100 lessons, then use a few Horizons pages to reinforce.

This year, we are using ETC, the readers that came with horizons, and various writing pages etc that I print from enchanged learning.

So far so good. We did not need the primer books and started with Book 1 ETC. We are about done with 2 now.

I find that they are really good, compact and if you use the little quizes, and alternative teaching approaches, you can get past most hurdles, while knowing that the concepts have been taught. I there fore recommend the teachers books that go with the ETC program. They are actually useful in teaching me how to teach, and giving me additional activities, to challenge if needed. Most teachers guides are glorified answer keys only.

ETC incorporates alot of writing in a fairly painless way. This was one of the main things that attracted me.

http://www.progressivephonics.com/download_p2.htm wonderful free phonic books to print. Seven in all.

Grandmother Vowel has 5 grandchildren, a, e, i, o, u. Baby a loved apples but couldn't say it so when he wanted one he would point to her apple tree and say "a, a, a". O loved pies and grandma always made him pies when he came to her house. Every time he had a bite of pie he would rub his belly (in the shape of an o) and say "o". I loved to play cowboys and indians. Every time he played, he danced around with two fingers over behind his head (like feathers) and chanted "i, i, i," (like an indian chant). U loved candy!! But....he always ate too much. Every time he ate too much candy he would hold his belly and say "u". And finally, e loved to visit the old man that was grandmother's neighbor. He always told stories and loved to talk with e. However, he was hard of hearing. So lots of times he would put cup his hand behind his ear and say "eh, I can't hear ye, boy, speak up." So when e's brothers and sisters were bothering him or saying something he did not like, he would say "eh, what's that I cant hear you."
