I'm wondering about which level of phonics to purchase for next year. My dd is 7 and 2nd grade. We just started homeschooling in August. She is currently finishing the 2nd grade phonics book and she is reading easily and fluently at a 5th grade level. Does is make sense to go on to a 3rd grade phonics book or would a higher level phonics book make more sense. Is there any prevailing wisdom on this type of situation?

I would go with her level. No reason to make her do things below her level just to finish all the books.

If she reads on 5th grade level I'd skip a year phonics. A lot of phonics are alpha rated and so you could skip to the D or E level just to keep it going.

Can she spell at a 4th/5th grade level? I would let that put some weight on what I decided to do for phonics.

I have a 3rd grader. Easily reads on 7th grade level, spells easily at 5th grade level and we really don't do any phonics other than his spelling program. BTW we use spelling workout.

I'm not sure what her spelling level is - we have not been using a formal spelling program. Is there an easy way to test spelling level?

I say skip ahead...that is what I did with my son and he is doing great.

I know some have really liked Spelling Power. It isn't an assessment for spelling. However, from my undestanding it is the only Spelling program you will ever need. I guess it starts out with tons of words and you test your child until the child misses one...at that point you begin your spelling studies. I probably made no sense...someone will know more. I am considering using it for next year.

Spelling Power is good just more prep time for the teacher and....I didn't need that. lol

Spelling Workout words for the week have a theme. So...while one week maybe tougher than another...they do tend to get increasingly harder as you approach the back of the book. ROFL

They also have little phonics activities as well as fun puzzlers and what not. Each week is different.
