I won't have time this year to do too much planning with moving and all, but I wanted tod to add some health in this year if I can..

I had heard good things about Abeka.....I was just wondering has anyone actually *seen* it or used it....

If so how in depth does it go into reproduction, etc.. I don't think that word will get *bleeped* but the *other* one will, so since I can't post the other word, how much does it go into *the act* if any..

I would prefer that it didn't, but since its a Biblical view, I'm sure things would be presented in a Godly manner, but don't know the extent...

    Thoughts?? or other curriculum?

    Blessings

I forget what grade level you'd be needing?
We're doing Abeka's 5th grade health this year.
I must admit, I'm not overly impressed. It seems to move kinda fast, and just reading through it seems a bit hard to grasp everything.
It doesn't talk about "reproduction" at all.
If you have any specific questions, fire away, and I'll try to answer.

    Thanks Heidi..

I was thinking of something more *introductory*..So if I get like 3rd grade level, it would be *in between* my two oldest guys, kwim? I thought that might make a nice starting point.....

I'm assuming I can buy it *stand alone*..is that right?

Also, do you mind listing some of the chapter names? It just give me an idea of what will be covered?

PHEW, one more :roll:Does it teach in *spiral form*, ie building on harder concepts each year or are they completely different each year?

    Thanks so much Heidi..

    Trish..

Thanks so much...I have a different standard for science and history books. I want them to be full of vivid pictures and/or photographs with possible labeling.

In addition, how many chapters are there?

Do they just stay on the human body, or do they get into diet, exercise and things like that?

    Personal hygeniene?

Is there a section for review? and question/answer?

If so, do I need a teacher's manual or would it be helpful?

Phew, one last more does the teacher manul come separately?

Trish, just when you have time to answer..I appreciate.. :D

I am looking for something that all 3 of my boys can gather around and read about and look at. So I do want lots of colored pictures, not just black/white and some kind of review and/or activities if possible..

    Thanks so much!

    Blessings

    Tina~
I am SO sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner. We were at the Homeschool Convention all day Friday and Saturday and spent the day today at church, out for lunch, and with my Mom. Anyway, I'm just now getting caught up on the posts.

If you're looking for something with nice pictures- vibrant, as you say- this is probably not the health program you want. There are alot of "cartoony" type pictures in it.

Here is a list of the chapter titles in the 5th grade book:
    Your Transportation System (circulatory system)
    Food for Vitality
    Your 30-foot-long Canal (digestive system)
    Physical Fitness in Action
The Real You (social acceptance, mental awareness, and spiritual warfare)

I think you could easily teach it without the t.m., and it comes seperately from the book. In other words, you can order each piece individually.

Let me know if you have more questions.
Again, sorry, I didn't mean to be ignoring you!

Tina, I am also sorry it me so long to answer. Mother's Day and everything I have been busy. I went ahead and brought your post over so I could see everything you were asking and look at the book at the same time.

Their is alot of pictures in the 3rd grade book. Alot of them are in cartoon style. But their is pictures that isn't.

Their are 8 chapters. Here's the title to each one.

This one talks about your posture nad bones gorwing straight.

    2. Exercise for Good Health.
This one is about your muscles, exercise and sleeping needs.

    3. Nutrients and You.
This one talks about your digestive system. It also talks about Vitamins A, B, C, E, K. Minerals and carbohydrates, fats, water fiber.

    4. A Balanced Diet
Daily Food choices, breakfast, lunch and dinner. It also talks about manners, snacks reading the labels on foods and malnutrition.

    5. Keeping Clean and Neat.
What is Personal Hygiene, wash you hand often, how to have shiny hair and wash around your eyes.
Why we wear clean clothes, Keeping your teeth a lifetime. Parts of the tooth, different kinds of teeth, why tooth decay and an unusual tooth.

    6. Fighting Diseases
Spreading germs, keeping germs out, keeping food safe, how diseases can be prevented and cured.

    7. First Aid to the Rescue.
Poisoning, snakes, ticks, punctures, sliver, blisters, fractures, nosebleeds and a good many other ones.

    Tina,
Teacher's manual is separate but I am not going to use one. I don't think you need one. I honestly believe you can plan how you would want to teach it and do good without one.

    Hopes this all helps.

Okay Tina this the last post. I forgot to answer about the quizzes. I remember it when I went to bed but honestly I was to tired to get back up and answer it. You can get a quiz book. I did get Vicki one. It has 43 pages. Their is few worksheets, quizzes and tests. One worksheet I am looking at is naming the bones. I think that will be good. I don't even remember all them. They are 12 to name.

I hope I haven't confused you with all this. Please feel free to ask me anything else. Maybe I won't write a book with chapters next time. Have a good day.

    We use Abeka Health....

I'd just like to add that we have used Abeka Health for years now and my kids love it. My sisters also use it for their children and we are very happy with it. I don't do any formal testing and I don't use the teacher's manuals. I use it as note taking experience and my kids love to just sit down with their health books and take notes. It has chapters in all of the upper grades that deal with mental health and teenage type issues that is just great.

My kids love the A Beka Health Books also. My middle ds loves to memorize and learn health and science materials. He ASKS for the quizzes and tests, so I get them for him. He delights in doing well on those. If he is delighting in the material, and is learning good information, then I will get it for him! My oldest ds has moved on to other things, but always enjoyed the A Beka Science and Health. My dd is going to use it for the first time next year (4th grade), so the verdict is out on whether she likes it or not! :D
The A Beka science and/orhealth series may not be for some people, but we've all enjoyed it.
