My 22 year old neice was admitted to the hospital today with pulmonary embolisms caused by her birth control. She is absolutely beside herself.... VERY upset because she wants to be home with her daughters (the youngest being 3 months old). She's worried about how her bf is going to make up the babies bottles, etc (no time like the present for him to step up to the plate and be a father... long story). She's going to need to be on anti-coagulants for some time but they have no medical insurance (our medical insurance in Canada covers hospital stays but not prescription costs when you leave the hospital) and the cost of prescriptions is going to be painful for them (a single income family). Pray that everything comes together for them and that she won't worry too much while she's in the hospital (I had to really come down on her to get her to stay instead of going home - she doesn't realize how life threatening this is).
Amanda just sent me a text and said she has clots in both lungs and will be in hospital for at least 5 days. She's in A LOT of pain (Thank you Lord that she decided NOT to wait until next week to return to her family MD and went into the ER). A lot on her mind I'm sure. Continue to pray for peace of mind, healing and for God's hand in the decisions she is going to need to make in the near future (safe birth control being one of them). And for child care needs.... I wish I lived closer to her so I could care for her daughters so her boyfriend can return to work because being off work for 5 days is going to strap them financially more so than they already were. Her doctor was in and suggested that this probably is the result of just having given birth a couple months ago and then add in the birth control pills, it was a recipe for disaster. Amanda said she didn't have any kind of pain in her legs. I'm just so very thankful she went to the ER yesterday.
Amanda is hopeful to be discharged tomorrow (depending on results of bloodwork). She has been able to go home on day passes both yesterday and today and based on her facebook post last night, she seems to be feeling better.
Amanda is now home (and VERY thankful to be home). She has to be on the anti-coagulants for at least 6 months and has to have blood work done once a week while she is on them (to monitor her clotting time). I just read her facebook update from last night about how thankful she is to be home and to be able to tuck her daughters into bed. She's on the mend. Thank you for praying for her. Oh! As a side note, she learned that the prescription she's going to need is only in the $20 for a 3 month supply so it's livable for them. God is good !
Please continue to pray for Amanda.... she has some tough decisions (birth control options) ahead of her. She's terrified and her boy friend is making a big joke out of it (good thing I can't reach through my monitor and swat him). I don't envy the place she's in right now
My niece was diagnosed again yesterday with a new blood clot in her left lung and is back on the lovenox injections again (she had been on a pill format maintenance dose to keep her blood thinned but apparently it wasn't enough). Please pray for her as you think of it.
