After reading numerous posts on here about displaced homemakers and options, I put in a few job applications never in a million years expecting a call back let alone and interview lol. I applied to Target a few years ago but never got an interview. I applied about a week ago and yesterday I got a call for a phone interview today. That was at 11 this morning and now I have a face-to-face tomorrow at 2!! I'm so nervous and excited at the same time. I haven't "worked" since 91!! I took my WorkKeys test and also went through Voc Rehab last year. That was a BIG boost to my self-confidence. With my surgery this past June, I had put work on hold. School doesn't start until January 14 so I need something to do for the holidays and also gas money to get Joyce and I to the school for testing, adviser appts and such. One thing they taught us in VocRehab was to not downplay being a SAHM. I actually threw that in when the man asked me today about a time when I've had to mulitask lol. I brought up military experience but also added that I'm a mom of a 4 and grandmother to 4! Figured it wouldn't hurt! Anyhoo, please send up lots of prayers for me tomorrow!!

Dang Jennifer! When you decide to shake it up you go at it full force. School and a new job! I am really impressed. I will say a special prayer for you and I hope you enjoy your new busy self! Let us know how it turns out. Anybody who handles grands like you do can manage a job with one hand tied behind her back!

YAY, for you!! I got a reject letter from Target within days. You are impressive!!

I'm about to set up an appointment with Voc Rehab, (severe to profound hearing loss). I've tried on my own with no success, but there are jobs I'm scared to apply for due to not hearing well. Were they helpful with you? I had a counselor in college because of of voc rehab scholarship, but my case was closed within 3 months of graduation (my choice, I was pregnant with ds).

I sure hope so. Things are definitely not getting better on the home front so I've decided I need to be proactive and start doing for myself. I'm not a very good example to my girls like this and it looks like someone in my life just doesn't want to see things get better. Only a handful of people know just how bad things have been over these years and I'm tired of it. I have had to be a tough one or I would have broken by now. I honestly don't know how I would have survived sometimes if I didn't have my friends here at the spot to support me mentally and give me a shoulder to lean and cry on.

Voc Rehab - I know it will vary from state to state but we are blessed with a very supportive system. Spring of 2011 I went through the WorkKeys testing and got my card. In April of the same year I did a 4 week program that included job skills such as interviewing, workforce do's and don'ts, resume writing, etc. The program was geared towards individual physical needs - I had pain management classes, arthritis classes, and my time in the gym was geared towards the same issues. We have an awesome Muscular Development Center that includes a weight room, saline pool, and physical therapists/therapy all geared around individual needs. We have use of the gym up to 2 yrs after we have found permanent work. They also offer classes in things like IT but they program is very intense and you have to be able to commit which isn't something Im able to do right now so I'm looking at Tech School Classes. Signing up for that program was one of the best things I have ever done for myself!

Oh Kris, look at your beautiful daughters and know you haven't wasted the years!! I fight that same battle. I babysat from I was young and got my first true job at 16 working for a soil conservation service, went on to a dental clinic where I did that along with cashier at a local pharmacy and joined the Army at 19. 8 yrs of that and I have been out the work force since. It's a hard mindset to rid yourself of that we've wasted the years. I know deep down that it wasn't wasted but I still have that feeling alot. I'm not getting my hopes up about the job but just the idea that I got an interview is mentally uplifting!
