I'm in a quandry over what to use for math this year with my 8th grade boy. Last year we used BJU Basic Math, but I really didn't like it too well even though he did fine with it. Every time I use the word "algebra" he panics, so I'm thinking maybe he needs pre-algebra. But would that be just more of basic math? Ds#1 is a math whiz, so what worked for him isn't going to work for little brother. He does well, but it doesn't come easy for him.

    Any suggestions?

Something that we have found useful is the *Key to....* series by www.keypress.com You can decide which area he is having trouble on and then get that particular book only. One book is like on integers, rationale numbers, etc. (I can't remember the other skills, because I have young kids and its been too long  )

I think each book is like 3.00 bucks. So you can see where he needs the practice and only get those specific books for that skill. That way if you wanted to go ahead with the next level, you could just *target* the area that is troubling them, not mention how affordable most of the books are..

Our family lives by Saxon. Dd is in Algebra 1/2, which is Pre-Algebra. There is also a homeschooling dad out there making video clips of lessons & selling them on a cd. These cds are called DIVE. Not sure what the acronym is. To ease her mind, we broke this text up into 2 years, 1/2 of it to be completed in 6th grade & 1/2 in 7th. And with the lesson being taught (by someone more capable that Mom), she is doing fine. Also, Ds who has some learning disabilities has had great success with the lower levels.
