    Can anyone tell me what the minimum credits are to be considered a sophomore, junior and senior in the state of MS? I've googled it, but have come up empty. Any help would be appreciated.

    The state DOE website should have some indication of how many credits are needed to graduate. Just divide by 4, and that'll be how many credits per year. Don't forget to check how they count credits - is it per course, or per Carnegie Unit (counted in ps even if the teacher doesn't finish the book and therefore the kids didn't get all the info they should have), or per semester, or what? If the number needed to graduate is a number that isn't evenly divisible by 4, then check for half-credit courses, like driver's ed, health & PE, civics, economics, or certain other courses that may accumulate differently.

    I've been lurking here because I'm interesting in homeschooling my children when that day comes, but I currently teach in a MS high school and wanted to answer your question. There aren't really any state guidelines as to how many credits a student needs to be classified by grade level. At my school we say that you have to have earned one math and one English credit to be considered a sophomore, two each to be considered a junior, three to be a senior. However, it's not at all enforced, as I have taught "seniors" who don't have a single math credit and have no hope of graduating any time in the foreseeable future, much less two months from now.

    From information I found on HSLDA there are no subject requirements to homeschool in Mississippi, so I would personally look at the entrance requirements at colleges your child is interested in if that's a path you're wanting to peruse. As far as public schools in MS, the graduation requirements for students who will graduate in 2012 or later include:
    * 4 English credits
    * 4 math credits, 2 of the credits have to be higher than algebra 1
    * 4 science credits, 2 of which must be lab-based, this must include biology
    * 4 social studies credits, this must include 1 world history, 1 U.S. history, 1/2 geography, 1/2 U.S. government, 1/2 economics, and 1/2 Mississippi studies
    * 1/2 health credit
    * 1 business technology credit (this includes any type of computer class)
    * 1 art credit (can include visual arts, graphic arts, or musical arts)
    * 5 1/2 elective credits

    Hope this helps!
