...We're using Abeka 4th Grade History (American) with my 5th grade daughter and 3rd grade son. I supplement with literature. We're working on a unit of hte Great Awakening and will be moving into the French and Indian War. I didn't have a lit book that went with the Great awakening, so I let my oldest start on I am Regina, and I've gotten stuff off edhelper to make it sorta "full". Anyway...she read Chap 1 & 2 today. I'm totally drawn to the book and read the next 6 chapters. Some are quite gruesome! It's REALLY well written, and I THINK she'd be okay. I was going to let her read it alone, but I'm 2nd guessing that. Sonlight calls it a 5-8th grade reader. I'm not concerned about the level as much as the content. I don't want to drop it b/c it IS a good book....BUT....I'm worried it might give her nightmares!!! BTW...when we get to the CHapter of French & Indian War, my son will be reading The Matchlock Gun NOT I am Regina...I'm giving him a 5 day break on the lit portion b/c this chapter on the Great Awakening is very short.
There are picture books of "The Last Mohican". Don't know if you'd be interested or not. Rachael watched the movie, but she was a good bit older than your daughter!
"Calico Captive" is another one about the same time....... But I will tell you - I was worried about Alexis last year and some of the stories in Trial & Triumph and the one she LOVES is actually the one where the girl gets crushed by stone! No kidding - and this is a girl who doesn't like to watch anything or read anything remotely scary.... she talked about the courage of that girl for weeks (even though we read about other stuff as well!!)
Oh, "Calico Captive" is a good one! And I just mentioned some for Daniel'sMom, but I'll be darned if I can think of what they were! No, I'll take that back; it was the War of 1812. Another one I liked, but it took place before the time you want, is Madeleine Takes Command by Ethel C. Brill. It's about a young French girl who, along with her brothers a few others, has to defend the fort from the Iroquois. It's based on a true story.
Thanks. I read the whole book yesterday. Truly, I was entranced and could not put it down. The writer wrote from a first person perspective, I could feel this child's pain, anguish and confusion. It was truly amazing. I'm still hesitant, because I will need to deal with a few uncomfortable subjects in this book. The book is filled with FAITH though, I don't think the author was Christian, maybe she was....but I'm amazed at the degree of this girl's faith, and belief and all. Anyway....we are going to continue it. I told my daughter, though, that I need to read it with her.
