Give me the low-down. Paperback or hardcover? Do I need the workbooks? If I go for the hardcover I will order the whole set at once, cause they are no longer making them in hardcover. If I go for paperback I will just get what I need for now. I really like the idea of the hardcover, but I have heard that they can be annoying as they do not stay open well. Any and all reviews and opinions are welcome
google books has a free digital copy... is this what you are after... looks old, but if it's the same book... http://books.google.ca/books?id=ntT...=result&hl=en&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false
The workbooks aren't needed at all. I printed mine out so I could use them as worksheets (he works on a separate piece of paper though) but printing out a page at a time full size keeps it from overwhelming my son. Because the lessons are word problems. I have the McGuffey's in hardback and they are nice, but being such thin books, hardback is hard to keep open, esp if the child is the one handling them. Given the choice, I'd go with paperback.
Thanks Josie. I will be getting the McGuffey readers as well. Maybe I should order those first, since they only come in hard cover (at least the version with the Ruth Beechick guide) and see what I think.
We've been using Rays - mostly out of the hardbacks - for seven years now. I say mostly because part way through the fourth or fifth year, the binding on the primary book started falling apart I ended up printing out pages and putting them in a binder. Grr. I agree - I do not think any workbooks are necessary. Our boys have either worked form the book on paper, or, IF they need a worksheet, I can make one up really fast on worksheetworks.com.
Thanks Sandra! So are you saying you would or wouldn't go with the hardcovers? I'm thinking I will skip the workbooks.
I think I would take the plunge and get them on CD (here). We've had to resort more than once to the online versions, and I find them really, really annoying. The ones in Google books were scanned in as images, and on certain devices they won't resize. We have a couple netbooks with really small screens, and I had the kids try to read them at various time on other devices like a tablet. The print was sooo tiny (and it's pretty tiny in the hardcover books already). Plus, the CD has more books/volumes, IIRC, than are available online.
I'm pretty sure the ones on CD are the same ones from google books, just all on a CD. So they would be the same quality.
Okay, then I suspect i would just use them online, and print as needed. I wouldn't go with the hard copies. The nice thing about printing them (other than no bindings to fall apart) is that I can make the page as large as I like. Those hard cover books have teensy-tiny print.
