Dalynn, I read your thread about the LA program MOH is starting. I thought you did Rod and Staff English with your kids before? How do you think these programs will compare? Or will you continue with R&S and add this in? I am very interested in it, but being new to hsing, I don't want to miss anything important to my DDs learning. Or maybe this is geared to older kids? They are grades 2 and 3. Also - do you need to buy other curriculum to support this? (on top of MOH) Thanks for your input!

Part of what Illuminations does is schedule some curricula. They are scheduling a grammar program called Grammar Punk; I'll be substituting our R&S. ;) They schedule a spelling program, The Natural Speller; I'll be substituting Spelling Power. They schedule a vocabulary program, and a writing program. You can use their suggestions on curricula for those programs and follow their schedule, or you can substitute whatever program you already have and plan to use. One thing that I got excited about is that the downloads are writable - so I can physically go in and replace the Grammar Punk schedule with our own R&S schedule! YAY!

But it's so much more than a schedule. They schedule readers, just like Sonlight or Winter Promise, but you have full family studies on those books. SL includes a few questions for narration, but they are not full studies.

The author of Natural Speller is tweaking the book to fit with MOH. I'm not certain exactly what that means, but my guess includes that words will be added that reflect the week's lesson, and maybe some of the activities will be altered, too. She is writing full lesson plans to go with it, which if you've seen the book you know that it's mostly a word list with only basic directions instead of a daily plan of action.

There will be a plan to read the Bible, as much as relates to this time period (OT and gospels basically), copywork (provided by yours truly!!), and I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

This is NOT just a schedule. This is like SL plus all the extras SL users have to figure out for themselves! Please come to the yahoogroup and browse the files and message archives! No commitment necessary! :)

DaLynn, I tried going on the yahoo group, but I could not follow the msg's and answers. I admit, I'm a little computer illiterate. I just didn't get much out of what I read - just people introducing themselves and stuff. Did I go to the wrong spot?

You emailed me a book list to go along with MOH months ago - is this the same idea, but they give you a schedule? It sounds great and I really like that I can supplement with what I already have.

Yes, it's like that! (And so much more!)

In the yahoogroup, to better organize the messages: go to the group home page, and click on Messages. Then, at the very top above where the messages are, there is a tiny blue link to "Group By Topic". That will make it more linear, more like a message board. You'll see a topic, and click to read the first message. Then scroll down to the bottom of the message, and there will be links to messages that were in reply to the original. You can click a reply to read it, then click "back" in your browser to see the rest of the reply links. When you're done reading those replies, click the "back" button in your browser again to go back to the topic list.

And/or, if you joined the group, you can ask anything you want on the group. Maggie Hogan (publisher of MOH) is there, as well as the Illuminations team head Dari Mullins.

On the group's home page, on the left where the links are that include Messages, there is a link for Files. If you click that, there are introduction messages and samples of what the program will include. Keep in mind that you can pay the $10 for the first month and see the program, try it if you want, and then if you don't like it you don't have to continue using/paying for it.

I'm excited about it, because it is almost EXACTLY what I was trying to put together on my own. I'm not using ANY of the curricula they recommend, because I already have what I have and I can't buy anything else, but I'm excited at the "tweaked" lessons and especially at the literature helps. In my understanding, the fee is worth it JUST for those! :)
