Something just hit me the other night.....do certain religious groups, like the Amish, have to file all the paperwork and be accountable to the state they live in regarding homeschooling?

If they have a religious exemption for filing, I think there is no reason I can't either. Anyone know about this?

We aren't in the States, but in the application we have when we opt to home school, religion is one of the 6 options/reasons we may choose to home school around here.
    Religion
    Discipline
    Enrichment
    Medical
I can't remember the other reasons...

They really should add a seventh though: does not like public school

I'm not sure how the Amish work. That would be a question for HSLDA. I'm thinking in Pennsylvania, there are people who are trying to get out of the extensive paperwork for just that reason. It puts too much "hardship" on them because of their "sincerely held religious belief", or some such. The way the government deals with the Amish may have something to do with it.

When we pulled our son from a private school it had about 5 or 6 reasons on why we were hs'ing. Religious, financial, medical, ahhhhh brain fog. I can't remember the rest. But we chose the religious/financial. I agree a "does not like public school system" should be added as a choice.

Actually last year when I had pulled Andrew out, I put that on his form and it was well highlighted... Must have left quite the imopression with them

On a funny note, Andrew is home on an out of school suspension (again) - they do this when they think he's out of line and they want a break from him. Anyway, I haven't said a word to them about homeschooling all of them in the fall, but they did say to me today they want to set up a meeting to plan for next year...

I'm thinking I should probably burst their bubble sooner than later (although I really wanted not to say anything at all - I wanted to wait until the school year began, for them not see any of the boys and then wonder what was going on). This is putting a snag in my mean streak  but I really don't feel like going to a pointless meeting that will serve no purpose at all.

I did the end-of-year meeting thing for Brandon w/o telling them we were homeschooling. I did it because I needed his 504 in writing for other things and it took them that long to get to it  . I say, if there is no benefit for you, SKIP IT and FEEL FREE!!!!! :D :D :D (I'm still just so happy for you!!!)

I know some Amish people in the state nextdoor. I'll ask them if they have to file, but that state might not even have rules about filing anyway. It's worth checking into, and, well, I'm pretty rebellious and I'll push the envelope if I find a loophole
