    my kids are NOT me....

It's a sad fact that none of my kids LOVE and DEVOUR books like I do. I think Alexis is at least liking books now - so it MIGHT change....

So for the rest of the year I was planning on doing TOG Y3 to get them rolling and moving into TOG Y4 for next year - but right now I don't have time to plan everything again.

Well - I switched to finish off the year. Even with High School level kids - I'm going to use SOTW Volume 3 to work them into the modern times. Then I might even just combine all 3 kids into Sonlight Core 300 next year (I think it's important for the oldest to get the modern history) - I might have Alexis do Core 100 with just the 2 doing Core 300.... or I might have everyone do TOG Year 4. UGH..... decisions.... decisions......

I'm upping their reading though to incorporate a few books that are a little harder than the suggested readings in SOTW 3.... but that's fine. (My 17 year old is reading Don Quixote in Spanish and is very amused by the translation into English - yeah for having a kindle so we could get both for free - but it is kinda cool we could get a book written in Spanish that fit the time frame)

I want the summer off - or at least most of it - where we can just do some math and some basic reading.

As much as I love curriculum shopping - at the same time I really DON'T like curriculum shopping. It'd be easier if my kids were all the same and they were all like me & NOT like my DH

hahaha... I have come to a similar conclusion!

My kids are not me, they are not "bookies", they do not want to listen to read alouds. They want visual means... videos, games, picture books. They do not want to hear me read, they do not want to read "school" for themselves. As much as I might want them to. They are not calm, quiet, sit still and listen/observe kind of kids. They are get out there and get dirty kind of kids (you know instead of quiet nature study where the animal doesn't run away and they have a beautiful picture to prove it, they are the flip over the rock and hoot and holler about the snake or bugs or other random critter they found then trap it in a jar and bring it in to look up a video about it kinda kids).

I need to accept that they will not learn like I dream, I need to embrace who they are and follow their lead.

You are doing fine, it's ok for you to be in control of that they learn, just remember they may not be able to learn it the way you want them to. You mentioned that they don't like books, but all your options are very book-y. Maybe they might like something along the lines of textbook/workbooks more?

I am actually looking at spending MORE money and enroll the 2 older kids in Kolbe for the standard diploma. They would just need to get caught up in Theology for those credits.

I'm wondering if this would make my oldest feel a little better with getting an actual diploma.

I'm not familar with Kolbe, but didn't you try it once before? How did it work for you? Or, maybe I should ask, how did it work for the kids?

Have you looked at OakMeadow's highschool?

we did do it once - but neither of the kids were in high school. For the standard diploma I think it would work ok though because you don't have to use any of their programs if you don't want to - but you need to do the Theology class.

A neighbor of mine does it and likes it a lot. Her daughter went to public school this year and thinks it's a waste of time - so is coming home this summer, will take the theology class and graduate and be done.

I'm thinking the same for Jake - I think if he got this stuff done he could graduate after next year - he'd be 18 and should have enough credits - again he would need to catch up in Theology - but I think he'd be good.

I like the idea of the diploma - I just like it. No idea why really - but I do.

My son is the only one who reads non-stop and is constantly looking for new reading material.

My oldest reads for school...and then occasionally a book will catch her eye...but rarely. I do have the "if you want to see the movie, you must read the book first" rule, so she's debating about reading Les Miserables b/c she wants to see the movie desperately (she likes musicals). We'll see!!!! It's a LONG book!

    HA HA HA!!!
