Well, this SURE DOESN'T fit into any other catagory!!! Have any of you EVER heard of washable sanitary pads? Someone on another board has bought them recently and really likes them! I didn't even know they existed!!! Can you imagine the money saved, not to mention the effects on the environment? And they're not that expensive.
Jackie, I seen them on another board. Kind of makes me nervous alittle. Just mostly gross comes to mind when I think about washing them out.
That's so funny you brought that up......... We were on vacation this past week and Ashley got her period. My best friend and I were explaining to the girls how ladies in the old days used rags and then washed them! Now, I read this........LOL It sure would save money; but, on the other hand, I agree with Kris- it seems kinda gross!
Check out this web page, so you can see what they're like. I'm in the process of making a reservation at the lodge of a state park for Rachael and I to take a Mother/Daughter retreat to discuss such things! Trouble is, when I took both girls to the doctor last month, she looked at my YOUNGER one, and said, "OH! You're just behind your sister!" Then she smiled at me and said I may have BOTH of them going at about the same time...then qualified it to "maybe" a year apart..... Rachael's 11, and I'm ready for her. Faythe on the other hand..... Not only is she only 9, but she's a VERY IMMATURE nine! Sigh....... Well, Faythe is NOT going on the retreat with us. I may take her NEXT year, though I would rather wait two.....
GAAA!!! Who created these!!!??? Can they be hung out to dry like a cloth diaper?? How would you wash and dry these, though??
About re-usable pads. One word: eew! It sounds environmentally friendly, but then you'd be doing extra washing, using water, detergent and electricity..... I don't know. I think our great-grandmothers would have loved to have the disposable kind!!!! And how absorbent are they????? I wouldn't trade the thin absorbent (disposable) kind we have today for those thick, thick ones from my teen years..... Just wondering how the washables rate on absorbency.
Washable sanitary pads brings to mind one word...UNSANITARY! I wouldn't even waste my money on them...that's just down right disgusting  Brenda
OH!!! I FORGOT TO GIVE THE LINK!!! There are several ladies that use them on my other board, and the ones that actually use them really like them. Those that have never tried them all think (same as y'all!) GROOOOOOOSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.gladrags.com/
One thing comes to mind. That would be what my dh preaches all the time. 'You get what you pay for. Sometimes its just better to go ahead and spend the extra money than to pay less and get less quality.' melanee
Anybody else have be-bop song go through their head, too? "Put your glad rags on and join me, hun...." With just me in the reproductive years in our home, I'll gladly shuck out the $2 a month for the convenience. I will check out the site, though. I'm curious how they stay put....I remember my mom's horror stories of wearing belts to keep them on!
Yo don't remember the belts? You're a young 'un! That's what they had when I started out! I remember being about 15 when we got a sample in the mail for tampons. I taried them and really liked them (Mom was past that stage of life by then.) So the next time we went to the store, I picked up some and put them in the grocery cart. Mom looked at me and said, "Do you know you wear those INTERNALLY?" She looked the box over very carefully and decided, "Well, if they weren't safe, I guess they wouldn't put them on the market....." (An inaccurate statement if I ever heard one!!!)
Looked at the web site they look gross, but I bet they will be a hit before long. They look pretty pricey but then you get to reuse them all the time. I don't know about that it still sounds gross I rather spend the few bucks a month and go from there. Heard to many horror story about re useable pads from mom and grandma. You would almost have to wash them along with nothing else and just think of all the extra water and soap you are using. I don't think that is saving. It's probaly cheaper to buy the throw away ones. SOUNDS better to me anyway.
I never considered washing them by themselves...... Keep in mind, also, that the disposable pads are really relatively "new"....what did ladies do 100 years ago?
The Keeper Cup..... GAAA! Has anyone seen the Instead cup at the pharmacy or Wal Mart? Our CVS tried to give away a package some years ago and couldn't!!
I had a roomate in college who used the cup thing. E-gats!!!! I'm glad she wasn't my roomate very long. I couldn't stand the sight of them. I can't imagine using those reusable pad things. For one, I am not a pad fan-no thank you. I hate feeling like I am wearing a diaper, except at night time. AND, I don't like the leakage. If I started using those things my husband would never do laundry for me again! So, no thank you! I'd rather pay the extra money for the convenience. Maybe they'll be a big hit in hollywood with the people who are such big advocates for the environment!!
Did anyone read the FAQ? If you're eating- swallow before reading on.... They say after you soak these things( soak before washing) you can water your plants with the water! Can you spell c-l-o-t-s?? If jackie hadn't said she knows of women who use these I'd think it was a joke.
What would you do if you were out on the town and you had to change it? Where would you put the used one? Wrap it up and put it in your purse? AH!
This thread is just too much! I just turned 30 and I have never seen even remnants of the belts. Now, I was around before "wings" came out, if that counts for anything :? . Becky, that watering the plants thing sent chills down my spine.... . Reminds me of those women who save the placenta in their fridge so they can eat it over the course of a few days. :!: :?: :!: Sorry, maybe that was too much for some of ya . I'm typically an au natural person....midwife, breast feed toddlers, family bed, and no chemicals in my house, but man, oh, man...give me disposable diapers and pads! There has to be at least one benefit of living in the 21st century! 8)
