Mine is copyright 1983. From everything I can tell, I have the most recent version.

The other grades that I own are more recent....if you consider the 1990s more recent.

LOL.... I have a thing with using "old stuff". I guess I'd better get over it huh! This book looks good, the lessons short and to the point. So far I think I'll like it.
    How are you liking it?

I bought 2nd grade, and I'll let Noah fly through about 2 lessons in a day, so we get into the 3rd grade a tad sooner. He's supposed to be in 3rd but the reviews say this is a pretty advanced curriculum... from what I see 2nd looks like it may be a little easy but 3rd might be too hard... who knows?

I just hope it works for us.

We haven't started it yet. My son will be a first grader but has started some of his 1st grade curric because he finished his K stuff early.

I'm thinking that he'll be able to start it maybe after Christmas or in early Spring (assuming his reading continues to improve at the same rate). So when I found it used, I hopped on it.

I see. I ended up going by a mennonite publishers and buying it. It's nice to be able to flip through the books a bit before buying... although..... I didn't get to lol. My son was crying to go home and making a scene so we left as quickly as possible.

I would LOVE to have Faythe especially work over the summer! She's started "Life of Fred" and also R&S grammar, and is doing well with both. Part of me doesn't want to stop, but to keep on the roll! I really think I'm going to like R&S!!! (Yeah, Deena! I know! Should have listened to you LONG ago, lol!)

You know whats funny... I'm excited to try out R&S yet at the same time I'm scared to leave Abeka lol. I hate actually switching publishers. I guess I dont have anything to lose. Abeka isnt really working for Noah... *sigh*
Am I right in thinking R&S can be done fairly quickly each day? A lesson doesnt look like much, maybe 15-30 minutes tops.

That's what I'm planning especially for my 3rd grader....doing quite a bit orally....and then much the same for my son when he's ready. My 5th grader could write answers all day and be fine but the other two just don't have the same long lasting penmanship skills.

My son has horrible handwriting, and it's difficult for him to write for any length of time. He says his hand hurts when he's writing. R&S's short lessons might be just what Noah needs.
I figure he will get enough writing practice with all of his other subjects we do each day. I'm planning on lapbooking... once I figure out what subject my ds would be the most interested in. I think it might be apologia science. I can make a nice 3 ring binder for it and maybe have light blue colored pages with lines on them and an empty space at the top that he can draw a picture if he wants to. (where could I find colored pages with lines?)

Have you joined the Elementary Apologia yahoo group? It has LOTS of resources for the notebooks and the author Jeannie Fulbright is a member too.

As for lined colored paper, you might be able to do make on in Word or Excel and then just put colored copy paper in your printer....but check on the yahoo stuff first, they have pages for non-writers too and they have more space of drawing pics and no or little writing.

That's common to be concerned about leaving a known curriculum! I hope R&S works out well for you and Noah! It's been a life-saver for us! We were doing A Beka Language too.

R&S CAN be done fairly quickly. We do most of it orally. We take turns reading paragraphs from the lesson, and enjoy discussing it back and forth. We change our voices and act silly sometimes. I try to make it as fun as possible! I have them do diagramming on a whiteboard....it's more fun that way, and easier to write on the whiteboard than the paper! If I feel they know it, I do NOT have them diagram every sentence the book has!

If they need to do a worksheet for extra practice, they usually just do it on paper, but sometimes they write it out on the whiteboard.

Tests are done on the paper.

 I'm glad it's working out for Faythe, Jackie! I won't say I TOLD YOU SO!!! Ooops, I just did, silly me! ;)

I think it's to the point, and easier for ME to understand. With other curriculums, there were things I just didn't understand and didn't know how to explain. R&S seems to make it clearer for BOTH teacher and student to understand!

I hope it continues to work for her! Is she using the Level 5 book? It does get progressively harder! We're near the end of the Level 6 book, and ds and I are struggling some to remember everything! But it's good! I'm so happy that he'll have such a better understanding of English grammar! He was NOT getting it with anything else. He spoke poorly and wrote poorly! (example: "Why are you doing that for?") He doesn't do that anymore, so that's been an added benefit!

Are you going to use R&S for Philip?

Now she's complaining she doesn't like it because it's "old", and the books "smells old". But in all honesty, I think today was one of her "meltdown" days that she has every now and then. Tomorrow she'll like it again!

LOL, I can relate to the "it's looks old" and "the book smells old".... although at this point who cares how the book looks as long as Noah likes this program.

Do any of your kids have trouble remembering what they learn since this curriculum isn't a spiral approach?

NOPE! Other programs? Yes. This program? No. This has been the best program we've gotten!

In fact, since dd did NOT want to do Algebra next year, she said, "Can we try R&S math? I like the English so much that I think I'd like the math too!" We'll see how that goes when she sarts with that later. Right now she's going through Singapore Math 5B to pick up concepts she might have missed and to reinforce others.

Deena let me know what you think of R&S math. I flipped through the 2nd grade math book and it was insanely easy for a 2nd grader. I wonder if the difficulty really steps up for 3rd grade.

They make legal pads of blue paper. Check the office stores, but I bet even Wal-Mart has those. They don't have holes, but....

THe other day when ds9 finished his English, he looked at me and said, "Is that all?"
