Does anyone have a recommendation for teaching 9th graders root words? Is there a workbook that you like more than another? I've used Word Roots from the Critical Thinking company at home but wondered if anyone had further input. I'll be teaching a group of about 10 or so highschoolers -- most of them will be 9th grade. Thanks!
Vocabulary Vine, English from the Roots Up, and Vocabulary from Classical Roots ... the latter would probably be best for a workbook/classroom sort of setting, but I don't know exactly what sort of set-up you have planned, how much homework you'll do, or how much instruction time you'll have. My personal choice would be Vocabulary Vine, but I like all three.
I recently purchase a game called Rummy Roots, from Rainbow Resources. It looks like it would be a fun way to learn and practice, but I haven't actually played it yet. It covers 42 Greek and Latin roots.
We really like Vocabulary from Classical Roots. The books are easy enough that you could back all the way up to book 4 and start her from the beginning and she could get 3 or 4 done in a school year. When we started, my oldest was in 6th Grade. She did the 4th, 5th & 6th Grade book in one year. Last year, she did Level A (which is technically their 7th grade book) and we just REALLY spread it out. She just finished B for this year, and we really spread it out! LOL After she's done a book, I add it to our Quizlet account (www.quizlet.com) and she plays games and quizzes herself to remind her. She does ALL the review, too, which keeps it fresh. It's really helped her.
