You know, Rhonda, that's a very good point about the pictures. You might write the authors and suggest that. They will probably do a remake at some point, and maybe would take that into consideration. But then, again, colored pictures would up the cost.

I would have paid more for COLOR real life pics (in hindsight of course). I think I just like the style of the elementary Apologia books now that we've experienced them. I'm hoping my oldest will enjoy the Real Science 4 Kids I just bought her. She dislikes science (as a general rule) but we've both committed to learning the level 1 Chem & Physics together this year (as our mommy/daughter special school time). They are short lessons and short books....but hopefully I can spark a return to at least liking science that was zapped out of her at ps).
Ohhhhhhhhhh, I knwo what kind of pictures you mean, inside the book, thats true cause they make the kids do the research to see the pictures online... thus the nasa.gov and all that type of sites are listed. they have pictures to color and booklets to make and science detectives to fill out and stuff like that though that helps, Libraries are great for videos and books with picture pages too? in regards to the Apoligia, I have not seen a book form, but the lessons in the CD have only the online pictures, the actual lesson is book form looking.. black and white when we print it.... So you may want to check inside one of thier books then too?
Yeah, that was sort of the issue. My younger 2 are still a bit young to do LOTS of research on their own and my oldest HATES science. That's why I got SOS 3rd grade for my 2nd grader who wanted to do science but didn't quite have all the research skills and with moving 2 times 5 months apart, I just couldn't do everything (only 1 mommy, 3 kids, etc...hubby who works for Uncle Sam all the time...you get the picture:roll::lol. My son was in K, middle was 2nd and oldest 4th grade. Technically, the girls were only in the recommended 2nd-7th grade slot that it's "billed" for. I think it could be used for younger but not with all the drama in our life this past year. I always mention it to folks who want a creation science multi-age curric........then I try to get away before they ask me how it went for us.......LOL
okay, yes I like SOS too! we just had a problem with too many classes in it, but we lean twoards that for science most the time from 7th grade on
My kids also seem to have their interest sparked when there are photos to view as examples. I always start out enthusiastic that I'm going to do this and that but then realize I really don't have the time. I'm trying to find something that's simple to follow, I can do extra experiments/projects (which I'll probably never get to anyway), and teaches science from a Christian perspective. I think I've narrowed it to Apologia and God's Design but haven't heard much about God's Design, anyone have experience out there with it?
Christian Science DVDs Also wondering if anyone knows of any good DVDs that explain and show science for elementary. (Creation based).
No experience with God's Design but I know I got an e-mail from Answers in Genesis about it being on sale. You might check it out. Seemed like a good buy.
Sos? I think it starts in 3rd grade level now if I am correct... it is cdrom with videos and printable or non printable work... it has all the recording stuff to keep your grades for you. It is what we are using for dd and ds this year after we finish his GC
Yep, it starts at 3rd grade. My 2nd grader started it after Christmas. It was a good fit for her since she easily reads at a 3rd grade level. We'll continue it this year since she only completed 2 or 3 units....we also do Apologia as a family.
Wow you mean there is someone else out there who does more than one Science at a time? They thought I was crazy last year at our science co op, I was also doing CGc with ds10 and following along with dd's Apologia work! I learneda LOT about science last year! HA!
OH, yes dvds, AOP has some too, and homeschooltraining ? Is that what it is called (DEENA?) they have science tools, homeschool science tools thats what its called! They have videos of science projects. Eyewitness science as well as Bill NYe the science guy and the guy with the rat all have thier own science videos.... maybe try googling "Homeschool Science Videos"
http://www.hometrainingtools.com/catalog/cat_science-curriculum.html Lol I was way mixed up wasn't I? Look at the list that come sup on this page it is awesome!
Well, really only DD8 did two. She likes science and likes to do it more regularly. I bought it for her so that she could do science daily if she wanted and didn't have to wait for mom. Apologia Zoo is a little advanced for her to read on her own....and she likes the SOS tiny tutor video clips and the games too. This year, we'll continue Apologia Zoo 2 as a family and she'll do SOS 3 until it's done. Her older sister is doing Real Science 4 Kids in the fall as well. Doing 2 science's was completely by accident after we flopped our attempt at CGC
I really don't like Bill Nye!!! (But the kids do!) I really don't like the way they keep skipping around, presenting little bits and pieces of information, rather than just explaining it.
We use God's Design and are very happy with it. The lessons are very well set out. We read the lesson, the children and I discuss what was talked about (always good discussions, as 1 child believes in creation, the other evolution), then we do the experiment, and then I have them write out what they learned from the lesson ( I choose to do that-isnt necessary) We have the whole set. We do science 4 x week. Currently we study "The Animal World" 2 x a week, and "The Universe" 2 x week. Next month, we will be starting 2 more books. It really is a great series and the children and I are very happy with it. The experiments use materials we already have at home, or are easily obtainable.
Beakman's World, that is the one with the rat guy as a side kick, I don't like it cause I hate rats! Lol. But the kids get a lot out of watching it!
