I'm new to homeschooling this year and am trying to find my way. I have two daughters, one in first grade and the other in kindergarten. I am using Abeka for first grade and my daughter is breezing through the assignments. Should i just allow her to set her own pace by working through the worksheets and then start the full lessons when she seems to need instruction? I feel guilty just pulling main concepts from the teacher books and not giving full instruction, but she's doing great on her own. She can read just about anything and I know the phonics so far is just not a challenge at all. Would appreciate any advice!!

I would let her go at her own pace until she needs help. Think of the "1st" on the Abeka book as a level, not a grade. If she gets to level 2 this year, she's doing great! :)

I let me daughter set her own pace as well. She is on lesson 55 already and we have only been doing school for 3 weeks. I will probley have to move her up a book level after the holidays.

I also let mine work at his own pace. I have no problem with him being in one "grade" for one subject and another for another subject. Grades and curriculums are as different as kids are. If she's doing well, I'd let her go for it. IMHO, it's best to let a child find their own stopping point so they can "learn how to learn". If they're held to a position throughout school where everything is always easy, they'll never learn how to work through a problem. Kids need challenges in school to prepare them for life's challenges.
