It seems l have had a rash of people asking me about my kids and school at my work lately! ( I am a nursing supervisor) If I hear one more story about how these parents of a friend of a friends child were screwed up and "put way behind!" by their homeschooling parent that had to reenter them in ps when it didnt work out-- I am gonna scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I try not to make it public knowledge b/c it is not up for debate, but I also dont hide it either KWIM?
I did have one positive conversation as one of the Dr's was very curious about it and talked with about 45 min and was actually pretty positive about it. Probably b/c he is foreign and realizes how uneducated Americans are as a whole.
I usually dont get upset by it, but it is really starting to get on my nerves! Jill

When someone gets diarrhea of the mouth just tell them:
Well, take a look at my kids, they seem to have turned out really well". And end it with a friendly smile.:D

Edited to say: Unless someone wants to pay my bills, they have no valid say-so over my family or me.

Our dentist homeschools and even uses the same curriculum that we use. I think hs-ing is becoming more popular.

oh some people have nothing better to do but talk, alot of them are just curious they haven't heard of it or haven't heard much about it and don't see how you can work and homeschool. They don't understand the freedome of homeschooling you can homeschool anytime and any where. KWIM.

My OB/GYN said that he wished he had homeschooled his kids. He said they perform better acedemically and are better behaved.

You will always hear someone thinking it is their business to tell you negative things. I never understood how some could be so liberal in their speech. You can either give them PS reports to make them cringe or you can use your kids as a positive example. I have not had anyone really attack my decision but I always respond by telling them how well my kids are doing in all areas.

Oh...and...although I would never confront someone on a decision that is none of my beeswax...I at one time thought homeschooling was insane! LOL. So, I try to remember how I felt and give some a bit of slack. Though there are some who are just plain rude.

I'm sorry you are getting negative comments.

I just want to let you know that a child/public school psychologist that was a guest speaker at my church this weekend explained to a group of parents that public school isn't always the best choice for every child. She basically said that other options like private school and homeschooling can be better options for those that are able to do so! She works for the school district that my son attended last year. She was telling us parents that there seems to be a difference in kids these days in the public schools. They seem to be academically more advanced, but socially are behind. They don't understand how to behave. This psychologist also said that 20% of kids have been labeled with ADHD, but really only 5% of kids actually have it. I don't know if she meant 20% in general or the specific school district she is in. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that a psychologist for a public school system is opened minded about other options because she sees what is going on (she is in the trenches).

I hope in some way that made you feel a bit better.

A cashier at our local market asked Ems why she wasn't in school, as we were checking out. Ems said I am homeschooled. The girl bagging the groceries said, "You're homeschooled?" with a frown.
The cashier said, loud and clear, "Yes she's homeschooled!" To the bagger.
Then she looked at me and said that she wished she could stop working and homeschool her children. It is something she's thought of for some time.
I no longer see her so hopefully her dream came true!:D

You have to start looking at them right. Then they get the hint (well unless their brain is the size of a pea) and clam up. Lol can you tell this is a sore point with me :loll:

Dh says I have this look which conveys something along the lines of "You are an idiot who is flapping your gums too much" Here I thought I was being polite! But really if you get a deer in the headlight look people will keep going for the throat.

I haven't been given any advice on homeschooling for over a year now. Dh says they are too scared too! :loll:

I have not been in any confrontation yet, but if it ever occurs I have told DH I am going to tell them, "when you have researched this form of education for as long as I have we can then have a conversations about it".

I use to think HSing was crazy too, until I had kids and started looking into it. I even have a friend that does it and at the time thought she was loopy. Now I go to her for help. :D
