Does anyone have suggestions for a great social studies curriculum for a third grade girl? At this point I am open to anything. Your suggesions are most appreciated.
We really enjoy "The Complete Book of United States History", "The Complete Book of Maps and Geography", "The Complete Book of American Facts & Games", "The Complete Book of Presidents and States" and "The Complete Book of World History". We also like this site:http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/lessons/matrix.html
AMerican Diaries--American Girls http://www.americangirl.com/agcn/index.html http://www.mcpl.lib.mo.us/readers/series/juv/title.cfm?id=38 There is one someplace that has lessons to go with it.... questions and answers and puzzles etc, to study what the girls are living in, with etc. search this site cause we discussed them before and we had links up?
American Girl stuff is great - my eldest reads them cover to cover in days, she loves them soooo much. Dear America Books and Sister's in time are good. I'm looking forward to this year - we're going to use Homeschooling in the Woods Time Traveler's series. I showed it to my dd (who'll be 4th grade, technically) and she just loved all the art and creating the lapbook, etc. Hope you find something that jazzes you up!
What do you want? You could just do the states...pick a different one each week. Enchanted Learning has worksheets on them, such as geography, the flag, mapping skills. Write to the Dept. of Tourism for each state and you'll get all kinds of info.
Preferably Christian but I am open to whatever right now. crazymama: We really enjoy "The Complete Book of United States History", "The Complete Book of Maps and Geography", "The Complete Book of American Facts & Games", "The Complete Book of Presidents and States" and "The Complete Book of World History". We also like this site:http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xp...ns/matrix.html I have looked at those "The Complete Books" and really like what I see. Thank you for reminding me about those. I am worried about covering an adequate amount of topics but haven't found any 1 curriculum that has what I want. I think I need to decide which topics I want to cover for sure and find curric and books to support those and go from there. I didn't want to get carried away with costs but I have noticed that ebay has a ton of homeschooling stuff. I plan on looking into the American Girls series further along with all the other suggestions mentioned so far. THANK YOU so very much ladies!! And please keep 'em coming as you think of them.
If you're looking for a set curriculum, we are currently using My Father's World (www.mfwbooks.com). It also includes Bible, science, art, and music; but you don't have to do all of it. We just like that all topics are related.
I really like going through them with my son (The Complete Book of) books.. because they give a good general over view.. with all the necessary details covered.. and really give just enough to make him want to learn more about most of the topics. Some he could care less about, but at least I know he touched the bases with it.. but others he can go on forever looking for more info about. We like these books for Grammar and Math as well (although we aren't using the math one this year.. or I don't plan on it anyway..lol). We.. or maybe it's just I, LOVE the Dear America books. I think they are a tad too girly for my son, but they really make the kids feel that they are there, I haven't read any of the American Girl Books.. though I'm sure they are in my future.. I have a 3yo DD who goes CRAZY over the American Girl doll cataloge (my poor bank account when she gets old enough to care for a doll that expensive!).
Sommer, there's some books written similar to Dear America from the guy's point of view. I can't think of any right off, because my guy is still little, but I know I've seen them. Your librarian could help you out!
Thanks Jackie! We will have to try to catch her someday... she never seems to be there when we get there, and all the others there (for a very small library they always have 6 or more working???) act like the childrens area is unchartered waters, drives me nuts.
Jackie.. I hit google.. they are called "My Name is America" books. Thanks, we will be looking for them!!!
Yes these are great books! We have a couple of them but ds10 is not yet into reading this style so I am going to try again this year after he turns 11 haha!
