I feel silly saying it over and over but.. hey "I am new" I have been to other message boards before and the ONLY way for one to really get to know people is to just start posting. SO... I am just curious: Is there anyone who will be homeschooling throughout the summer or year round? When are you finished this year if you don't year round school? ---- For us.. we took a turn towards some unschooling at the end of our year. It was what "WE" needed as a family. However, I have gotten my curriculum for next year and was SO excited over a few things.. I decided we are DOING Science all through the summer. I bought "Flying Creatures of the fifth day". The kids LOVE it.
We will be doing school until the end of June, at least. We will probably do a week here and there between camps and VBS.
She, I did that last year. This year, I'm looking forward to a big, fat, excellent break as Jeannie goes to camp and whatnot. Lol, Mommy needs a breather.
We Homeschool up till may, then take a month off for summer, but this year we will do some schooling during summer
We are technically finished on 5/25. However, I have decided that we will do one subject per day for like an hour or 2 to keep the kids up to date. Last year it was hard to get them up and going after 3 months off. Of course there will be lots of field trips and such and so many things that are educational but not book-work. We love to stay in National and State parks, so we often participate in Ranger led programs and lots of nature stuff. My DD loves animals, she is currently into bird watching, so I expect a lot of that this summer.
It had always been a plan to homeschool during the summer, but I've never been able to pull it off due to camp, family vacations, visiting with grandparents, etc. So I gave up! This year, though, my oldest MUST finish her science book. She needs to finish a chapter before the month is out, another before camp in June, and the last one between the time she gets home from camp and our summer vacation in July. We officially stop June 8th this year, because my DH is a public school teacher, and that's his last day. We pretty much stick to Dad's schedule!
We were going to do the all year thing, but a couple of weeks ago decided to bag that idea. I can tell dd is worn out, I'm worn out, we have occupational therapy every Monday, and a lot of other appts that have come up lately so we were officially done last week. We will however be working on math and reading through the summer, just not as full force as we have been. We just want to keep it fresh. We will be starting back to school end of August.
Ooh, Apologia. We really liked that one We take the summer to do reviews, art, reading programs and extra things, so I would have to say it's just more relaxed.
We school year round which allows us more flexibility. We can take off when we want, and don't have to school as long during the day.
Our last day this year was May 4th. The plan was to go through May but we finished early. We will take off June and July for summer camps, VBS and vacations and then begin probably in the middle of August. I was going to wait until the day after Labor Day like last year but I will get bored by then.
We school year round. We do however slack up a lot in summer. going year round lets us be flexible and take time of as needed.
we generlally finish in the first week or so of June, then do a week or two of summer school end of july and begining of August area. We do that for review. Then we start back up AFTER labor day. I go by when they at least are in the review book at the end of the LIfe Paks , which we never seem to get to untill june! Lol! Even when I plan out from the begining with days off each month etc, we are scheduled to be done in May, but it seems I reformat our scheduel at least three times a year and reset the dates. Regenerate Sos to be the new dates and poof! its June again! Thats okay , our steps are ordered of the Lord!
Thats what we do too! We love doign the ranger programs! And every camping trip is educational for us. So my summers are really full of trips and things thats one reason we dont school all summer
I normally take summers off. However, this year I am schooling all year. I rather take days off as needed or at our lesiure. Like today for example is a half day for no real reason. lol. My kids could pretty much stop for the year...so I am taking it easy. However, in a few moments we will be doing a few things. I do like to do more fun and creative things in the summer.
I guess you'd say we homeschool year-round and take off when we want/need. We usually do trips and VBS and stuff over the summer, that takes away from actual book-work, but can certainly be considered learning! I already got ds13 and dd10 math books from Barnes & Noble to do over the summer. They each have certain concepts they need to strengthen, and I was able to find books that work on those things in a fun way. So they'll be getting some work in on the math concepts, but not having to work in the very same math books they use during the school year. So in that way it's a break for them. But in the other way it keeps those skills up to par and helps strengthen them, so that is great inthe long-run. We'll have other little things we do. My ds 13 has some Apologia Physical Science that he needs to finish up also, ds15....ooops, I mean ds16 (as of yesterday!) has a few experiments he needs to do to finish up his science, and dd has some math lessons to finish up. They all have some English to do as well. So we'll just keep working on stuff until they're done. We should be "done" by mid-June, then we'll just do little things off and on the rest of the summer when we can fit them in. Last year we did no schooling at all over the summer, and we paid for it. My kids lost a lot of what they were just getting the hang of when we stopped, so we ended up with a lot of review. So this year, I'd like them to keep moving forward.
We're year rounders too. It's partially because my daughter asks to do her work all the time! Partially because I slacked off in Science & History for the first grade year - we were making up first grade stuff last summer - BUT I also did review for L/A, Math and Bible for those months as well. Also, while we took our vacations, i tried to do some educational stuff with them during it. Another reason I've liked it is not having to really dwell on "review". She tested out of a few of the units b/c she new the material. This also helps me during the school year, not feel guilty if we have a long weekend here and there or take days off for special reasons. So far, this is how we are....may change as the years progress, but I like my children feeling like every day is a learning experience.
