please... my youngest is having trouble sounding out and saying the longer words. So I set with her as she reads aloud and tell her the words she can't get... I even go over them with the pronunciation key and she still gets confused... she is 12 and has always had trouble with reading her Science book (because of the huge words)...

I want to give her some help with this but I have no clue on what to do... any ideas?

If she reads silently, alone, does she comprehend what she read?

Have you had her eyes checked?

I will second having her eyes checked. My dd had perfect vision a few years ago when her eyes were checked and recently (due to her not being able to read, my frustration with her, & suggestions from some of you) I took her to get her eyes checked even though I thought she was fine and I found out she has trouble seeing close and far! Hopefully this will solve the problem!

Also, do you suspect any learning disabilities at all?

There are some simple tricks you can try like colored sheets over the text

Popsicle stick or ruler to guide the reading of each line or make your own, addign the color tint... like these

Does she have difficulty with other reading material, or just science?

I have her eyes checked every year because of her lazy eye, which got worse this past yr. Lindina, she had trouble will all work, reading, language, math, history, etc... that have long words. I think she has trouble sounding them out (like 5 syllable words). She seems to get tongue tied too with some words.

Had a girl just like that last year -- even when you tell her the word, she can't repeat it correctly, like you said, kind of tongue-tied over it. I don't know what to suggest about that, except possibly some phonics work on syllables, root words, affixes, and the like. We did some last year, but never got to finish the part that works on exactly these things.

We used Developing Better Reading, which is from Rod & Staff. The first lessons are letter sounds, what are vowels, what are consonants, what are syllables, what is accent, and so on. Each lesson has a word list - first, two- and three-letter words or syllables, later two syllables, three syllables, on up to five- and six-syllable words. How to pronounce them, how to divide them, and especially how to read them. All the spelling and pronunciation rules are specifically taught. The goal is to read the word list at an age-appropriate speed (there's a chart in the manual), and (theoretically) you don't go to the next lesson until the current one is mastered at an age-appropriate speed. I think there are 36 lessons (but it could be 30 or 32... I forget). The manual is needed to properly teach the course. The manual and student book together are I think still less than $10.

My youngest was that way and I had her reading in a tape recorder then she would listen to what she was saying and say that's not right and keep repeating it till it sound right to her. It worked wonderful just some practice and she will do fine.
