I'm going to sound like a broken record, but my favorite resource this year is...

teacherfilebox.com . Since he doesn't like reading, they have leveled reading packets that come with questions to check his comprehension as well as activities to strengthen his reading skills. It's not fine literature, but you can read the classics to him to whet his appetite for them while having him improve his skills with the shorter stories. They have file folder genre reports to do -- my daughter is doing the fiction one this year -- she's already done the reports in historical fiction, realistic fiction and jokes/riddles. They have things to teach the various types of writing too. homeschoolspot.com has subscriptions for a discount, but it isn't available all the time from them.

Ok, I'm done, and I'm lifting the needle off that record.

You can find some free grammar at http://www.dailygrammar.com/ and some reading and other stuff at middle school level at http://rhlschool.com/ that you can print out for free.

I'm going to suggest that you let him read whatever he thinks he'd like to read (within reason, of course), even if it's below his reading level, for the rest of this year and over the summer. Okay, sure, have him narrate to you what he's read in each chapter, but that will probably do more to encourage him to read than insisting he be on grade level in everything. Those short humorous chapter books (my son devoured Animorphs - are they still around??? not so humorous but he loved them) will finally give way to more serious works later. For science and history, let him research Usborne and DK books -- lots of colorful pictures with brief paragraphs/captions packed with info in small doses. My ds loved those too.

All my best to you and yours!
