the resell of sos is something I have never delt with, I have both bought used and sold mine no problems.
I don't think that it doesn't work as a re-sell, as a friend of mine and I went in on the Spanish together and neither of us had any issue even after we let another friend use it (all at the same time too), I think SOS just prohibits it for some reason.
Technically you are not allowed to sell SOS. Personally, I think that's a bunch of crap. I buy it, it's mine, I have the right to resell it. But that's neither here or there. Legallly, I can't sell it, so I won't, regardless of how not right that is. But I guarantee you I will NEVER buy another SOS product again!
hmm okay, I just read that they only let you use it for up to 6 kids, so we can trade it off up to that many kids so thats what I followed. I mean I can understand that, th ey need their profit to keep going on in business, so per 6 people sounds good to me.
I'm sorry! That's STILL a bunch of crap! I mean, what's the difference between that, and me buying a book? Can I only read it to six children and then have to buy a new one? OF COURSE NOT!!! We're talking greed, pure and simple.
We switched because the SOS algebra just wasn't working. She was frustrated, she cried and just couldn't understand it. This is my (now) 15 yr old that does all of her work mainly on her own. Once we got the TT she had no more problems. She was able to learn the algebra without needing help. With the SOS its not the curriculum disks that can only be installed twice, its the installation disk. We have had very bad luck with computers, and we have reinstalled it numerous times on different computers. The curriculum disks work every time, its the installation disks that have the serial numbers that need to be entered when first setting up. If you have it already installed on your computer, any curriculum disk (with the proper production year) will run. If you have 2010 installed, you can run the curriculum up to that year, but 2011 curriculum will need the updated installation disk. So if your friend has used it for 6 kids, and then hands it down to you, as long as you have SOS already installed they will work. We ordered several curriculum disks from an authorized SOS dealer on Ebay, and each one came with an installation disk. So we have plenty of them left over in case we need to reinstall it again on another computer.
that is why we went from LIfe Paks, it was frustrating trying to teach without teacher helps aside from the answers, and then dd wash a learn on your own kid so teaching her was frustrating for me too! So, when she went to MUS and aced it I worried, in senior year she did Alg2 with both SOS and MUS helping here and there.. that worked fine.
If SOS math is anything like their LA, heck no!!! lol! We started TT last year in math as well as SOS LA (did not continue SOS this yr) and it was like night and day. TT was wonderful...SOS, you have nothing/nobody to teach you. It is mostly reading comprehension and a tiny little cheesy video. TT does all the teaching in an engaging way! Hands down TT!!!
I was not impressed with SOS L Arts, either, but thought the math may be different, since the Spanish is. Thanks everyone for the opinions and advice! Looks like TT wins out, despite the few small inconveniences. I guess there is no such thing as a perfect curriculum!
I do have to say, having a dd who did LIfe Pak and sos for most of her homeschooling years that she is excelling in College courses now and that is a plus for the SOS, and Life Pak Lanugage arts, I did not discover the BJU stuff until after she was in high school and she did not use that.
I don't know if students excelling is that indicative of a curriculum's greatness. I say that because almost every curriculum I have read reviews on has a lot of success stories. They probably also have students who don't excel in college after using their product. I don't think it is always because of the product. I found it amazing that when I went to college (I have 42 hours from comm. college), I had a lot more confidence in my ability to learn. I also waited until I had been out of high school about 10-11 years. Now I know that CC is not the hardest or most strigent, but I did have to do some thinking (in some classes) and I did well. In fact, the only class I remember really struggling with was Biology, just because of the volume of information we had to cover. I still made an "A" (due to the curve), but I could have done a lot better, if I had spent more time studying. I think that most people have a great ability to learn, it just depends on so many factors that I personally don't believe we can count on a curriculum to be "THE" factor. I think it plays a part, but not as large as we sometimes like to believe. Believe me, I would love to be able to buy "The curriculum" that would be "the answer" to all my concerns.
