Anyone here use SOS or have in the past? Likes, dislikes?

This is my 1st year of homeschooling...my kids are in 1st, 4th and 8th. We went with fill Abeka this year..But now that I know I can do it..I would like to change it up some. I will for sure use Abeka Math and Language for the boys and Abeka math for my daughter. I was thinking of using SOS for History.Geo and Science for the boys. I have felt overwhelmed to say the least going into this with 3 different grades. I see that SOS grades things as they go...and a lot of computer work typing etc...I need all the help I can get...
    Thoughts?

We purchased SOS 8th grade history, science and LA this year. We are currently still using the science, but the history was too boring for my son. He is a history buff and requries much more depth and variation in his history studies. We like the science, though, especially since you have most of the experiments on video built into the program. The LA was good for him for grammar and spelling, but it was a bit too advanced for him in some of the writing.

We like the idea of the program keeping track of grades and a schedule. You can also add courses and assignments to it. I use Math-U-See and a separate US and state constitution curriculum. I added the assignments to the program so I can make a complete report card for him. We had to forego the scheduled assignments, though. It just wasn't practicle for our varied schedule.

Next year, we plan on continuing to use the science and maybe LA. We might also look into electives, but not much else. There have been several threads recently about SOS, so you might want to search the forums for posts. Hope this helps! :)

Not that this helps much, but I am planning on using a couple of subjects through SOS next year. Elementary Spanish for sure and possibly one other one.
I like that some of his work can be done a little more independently by using SOS... I think that has to be a plus! :)

This is my first year home schooling. I have a 9th and 10th grader, although the 10th grader is doing 11th grade work. They use SOS for everything with the exception of the 9th grade algebra. For this, I'm using Teaching Textbooks.

So far I LOVE SOS, mostly because it does take so much of the load off of me. Every little bit helps! (o:

Keep in mind that SOS is 20% off in April!!! I'm thinking of using it for French for both girls, and for Science for my middle one!

9th grade history improves a bit, its more civics related. (I think it is 9th)
We did 4th grade for all subjects, did not like the math so stick with yoru Abeka math if that works.
Science we have used for all three from 7th up to 12th with dd taking a year of Apoligia Bioligy.
ds has taken other things for high school, and younger ds is doing sos8 in math ( I do not recomend math with sos, not that its bad but too much typing is annoying! LOL,

hISTORY IS OKAY, it depends on the kid, they may liek the fact the timeline is a click away! My kids got lost in the timelines in science and history both! Fun!

They like the aps they can build and create for the main page for each student as well.,
I like that I can change up the days off at a click, and reset if we are ahead or behind,
    We have been both! lol

Teachermom...we were using SOS 8th grade history...I never noticed a timeline available. I'm gonna have to dig in and find it! We love timelines here, too. :)

TeacherMom, you taught me something new as well! That's pretty cool!

My ds is actually doing 9th grade history as I type. It's been pretty interesting and is more like civics. Right now he's actually studying about health related issues, with drugs being the main focus of today's lesson.

I do have to agree with TeacherMom with regard to SOS math, especially for the upper grades. I haven't used it for the lower ones, so I can't speak for them. My dd is doing algebra 2 and actually said this morning that she wished she had a teacher for it. How I wish I had known about Teaching Textbooks before they started this year. I found out early enough for my ds to switch but by the time my dd began having a little difficulty (which has been just recently), she was already far enough along, that it wouldn't work to switch mid-stream.

I would HIGHLY recommend TT for upper grades in math!!! I absolutely love it and I've actually started doing the lessons along with my ds in order to refresh my memory as well.

singer4Him my dd is doing alg 2 with it too! Her school is homeschool in a classroom and they have both SOS and MUS, she is finihsing early in a couple weeks actually so she will then by choice go back to watch the videos of MUS Alg1 for the remainder of her year.
