Do any of you with a bit older students do anything about reading faster? My oldest (age 14) and youngest (age 8, almost 9) read fairly slow. They do well with comprehension, they just read slowly. On tests like the ITBS, and also the SAT's etc., that my oldest will soon be taking, the tests are timed. They don't get to everything, which lowers their score--not right!!! I'm just wondering if there's a way to help them speed up their reading so they can at least get closer to finishing, and also keep up their comprehension level. I"m not majorly worried about these tests, I just want them to do well in life in general, and they both, especially my oldest, are just so slow at reading, that it makes the tasks ib school worse cuz it takes them so long to get through it. I guess I want to help smooth the way for them so it's not so hard when/if they go to college!

I was considering speed reading just yesterday. Ems reads fast, silently, and average, orally. I do not know if this would work for everyone but my teacher taught us to only pick up the important words when we read. He said to try and skip words such as the, to, a, etc...because these are words the brain already will process without seeing it. They are words that naturally bring a sentence together. Also, when you read and a word is known, the eye should continue moving and it will pick up the words even if the mouth or brain hasn't yet put it into a sentence. Did that make sense?:| I do not believe this is speed reading but it really helped me to read much faster and I have tried to teach Ems to read this way. I think this is why she reads so fast. She is definitely understanding the stories because she does great on the quizes and speed drills. So she really isn't dropping anything important. It would probably be best to go with a program of some sort because it will be explained in a way that can be understood. Good luck! I think teaching your children to speed read is a neat idea. Patty
