I'm looking at a spelling program and not sure where to use the Dolch lists or Sequence spelling (net, nets, netted). Do any of you have a preference either way?
I think it would depend on the child. My son can spell whatever I throw his way in whatever order. But I can see sequential will be easier for my DD to start with.
Different kids need different stuff at different stages. I'm all for introducing spelling by phonics, with encoding for spelling at the same time as decoding for reading. OTOH, I also like Sequential Spelling for those kids who learn better by "word families" from 2nd or 3rd grade on up.
Actually neither method has worked for my son. He learns better by correcting his mistakes. So when he spells a word incorrectly I have him spell the word out loud 10 times correctly, then I add it to his weekly spelling list (we do activities through the week with the words), I will also have him write the words, draw the words, spell them with magnetic letters, write it on the magna doodle, whatever. Then at the end of the week I give a spelling test. He almost always gets them all right.
For my son I am going to use the Sequence way. I used SS with my oldest and he did wonderful, I also believe it will work for my youngest.
