Hi, I'm sure you all have favorite spelling books, can you tell me what they are? I'm thinking about ACSI Purposeful Design but I'm very open to suggestions- thanks so much!
Spelling Connections by Zaner Bloser. I think it's laid out nicely, there's plenty of practice for the main spelling list. The downside is, there's little practice for the challenge, review, and what they call Champion Challenge words.
I really like Sequential Spelling. It is awesome!!! Also the spelling connections is a good one that Becky has already mentioned.
Depends on the kid. lol The most popular 3 spelling programs that you will hear about are: Spelling Power Spelling Workout Sequential Spelling That doesn't mean there aren't others out there and some that might be a perfect fit for your kid.
We love a reason for spelling, we started using it 3 years ago, and love it for all our kids. Even our 4 year old uses it. Just my 2 cents
It all depends on what your child needs. My oldest two are natural spellers and Spelling Power was a good fit for them. My youngest struggles with spelling, although not ready (go figure), and we tried all types of things. Sequential Spelling was the best we found until we stumbled across All About Spelling, which I highly recommend to struggling spellers or younger kids. It is based on the Orton-Gilligham method. -Cheryl dd-14 (school of the arts) homeschooling ds-12 and ds-11
That's funny, my ds ws not a natural speller and Spelling Power worked wonders with him. Learning the rules really helped. Spelling Workout was a bomb for us
I've always made my own spelling lists and activities but this next year for 7th grade I'll be using Spelling Power. Samantha is an excellent speller and this program is dictation which will be good for spelling, puncuation and proper word usage.
We use Spelling Power and LOVE it! At first I was afraid that they wouldn't remember how to spell the words. But they have. I'm VERY impressed with it. Teaching them the spelling rules has really helped. I tell them it's the "clue" for the list and then give them the test. We go over the words they get wrong and I point out how the "clue" applies to that word and they ususally get it after that and at review time they still have it. It's awesome. It's worked for both the boys, one is a natural speller the other was struggling. I ordered the activity cards to go with it for next year.
Thanks for all your replies, I really appreciate it! I'll have to check these out, most I'd never heard of before.
We are trying Megawords very sooon. In the past we have used: Calvert Spelling cd rom SWO (spelling workout) Natural Speller
I am glad this thread was started. I am making my own spelling lists from Emma's books as well as a list of commonly misspelled words. It is working great but it would be nice to have a list of words that I may not have covered.
