I'd like some opinions. My daughter (11) just finished up the Spelling Power program, which was "supposed" to carry us through high school. Should I just ditch spelling for her altogether, since she just seems to get it? If not, are there any online sources for high school/tougher spelling lists? For now, we've been working on words from the National Spelling Bee list at Meriam-Webster (especially since she'd like to try the spelling bee again next year). I'd like to continue to challenge her, and strangely, she finds spelling fun. Thanks! Carol
I'd stick with the National Spelling Bee list. Make sure she knows the etymology of each word if she's going to be doing the Spelling Bee! Also, doing a vocabulary program like Vocabulary from Classical Roots, or some other program like that, can help her with roots and etymology.
we are going to ditch spelling when we finish the program we are using. dd is currently learning to spell words I never even heard of! I figure once you can spell, you can spell, kwim?
I agree with Karen. If you can spell you can spell. If you can't you can't. Samantha is a great speller and I thought of ditching it as of next year (7th grade) but then I found Spelling Wisdom. You learn spelling and puncuation through dictation. You can have them write at first and then move on to typing. It looks great. I used a free sample download I have and now I am buying book 3 for 7th and 8th grade. I believe they have 5 levels.
Wow, I've thought about what it would be like to actually FINISH spelling power but can't even see that far ahead!! Your DD must be a little spellin wiz! Congratulations! (We're only on Level D!)
