I need your help. We aren't doing enough to learn our spelling words. This is the first year that they're thrown in WITH our Language Arts, so it doesn't get it's own workbook. I do like the way they cover the words in this LA program BUT after doing a section and coming to the spelling test, I think both kids missed maybe 10 or more out of 15. So I was thinking of doing about 5 or 10 minutes a day going over spelling words. However I do not want to have them write them over and over because I know that is only going to lead to me fussing about them not working and ugg.....the thought kills me! I did think that it would be fun to play some games related to spelling. I mean in person, hands on games (not computer related, or board game/writing related). The one that came to mind was a red light/green light type of game where they start at one end of the room, spell a word correctly and take a step forward until the first one reaches me. Can anyone think of any other actual physical games like this where you could incorporate spelling words?
My oldest two boys and I play "Around the World" or "Baseball." They both start of at Homeplate and with each word they move to the next base. See who gets home first. They really enjoy the competition. If I think of more, I will post them later. Just wanted to throw this one out there while I was thinking of it.
If you can get your hands on one of those foam mat things that is all the letters (they are like 1'X1' square and hook together). you can have them hop from letter to letter of the spelling words, if they land on a wrong letter they lose a point or something (don't know make up some rules..lol).
We played the basketball game "horse" except we'd use the spelling word(s) that gave them trouble instead of the word "horse".
Great idea. Where we live we don't get to go outside much during the school year, due to weather, but we could use a trash can and a foil ball.
www.spellingcity.com It's Free (there are services you can pay for, but most of the games and such can be done for free). You enter your lists and he can play games - like hangman, word search, matching, etc. My middle child used it this last year and LOVED it. Will even give your child the test.
