How do you all do Spelling with multiple ages? Do you do a list together or does each individual have a list? What kind of things do you do to help them retain the words (actvities, games, etc.). (our boys are 11 and 8-1/2) Thanks!

I they are reading equally well, or are on the same level, then I would keep them together as much as possible.

In the Fall, 4yo, 6yo and 8yo are all going to be doing spelling together. 8yo is a horrible speller. 4yo can sound out cvc words and 6yo is an okay speller. None of them have any formal spelling training.

I would prefer to utilize Spalding for the whole Language arts curriculum in the Fall, but thats not going to happen :(.

We're going to start out with Word Families and then branch out from there. 8yo will also do spelling words in her LA book. She and 6yo are almost equal readers, they're going to do HOP in the Fall and I am going to also use those words for spelling as we go through them.

This is expensive, I won't lie....but you should never, ever have to buy another spelling program.

This goes from 3rd Grade to 12th Grade.

    I will use Spelling Power

I've always done spelling pretty individually, and this will be no different, they will have different lists BUT, it's the same book, same format, etc. And it should take only 15 minutes a day!

I borrowed my friends before I bought ours. Watched the Quick Start DVD, etc. And it's just really, really neat. I've heard so many good reviews from friends, and have just done the assessment part with my kids. The companion CD that comes with it, has all the forms and things you'll need too. AWESOME! :)

Someone from HSLDA reccommended this to me because my dh is the only one in the family that can spell. Do I understand you correctly, ALL you need is the book and it last from 3 grade to 12th grade for all your children? If so, the price is not bad.

Or, you can also look at Sequential Spelling from AVKO. It was written by a guy with dyslexia, for people with dyslexia regardless of age. It works really well. It's based on word patterns not on spelling rules. There are seven levels, and everybody starts with level 1. You can buy all seven levels at one time, or get one level a year. NOT expensive! They do sell a particular kind of spelling workbook to do it in, but you don't have to get it because they give you guidelines in the book for using regular notebook paper. You can do it with or without the dvd - which didn't exist yet when I got this program several years ago.

Whatever you do, don't waste your money on the workbook, like I did.:(

Yes. And the new edition comes with a CD where you can print off the daily forms (you can buy "workbooks" for 5 bucks), as well as a Quick Start DVD that explains how it works, and how to do it, etc. :)

We used to use Sequential Spelling. My son used the lists from Superteacher worksheets/Spelling City....so this is a little different for him this year.

I like the way this is laid out because it's LIKE Sequential Spelling BUT it tells you the rule, and they have the opportunity to learn the rule, not just the lists.

    :)

Oh...and I like that I'll never have to buy Spelling again. :)
