It's been a long time since I've checked in on these boards, just as it's been a long time since we homeschooled our kids. My daughter will be graduating from a public high school this fall. She's in an extremely competitive program. In order to get all of her science and math courses in, and still have room for a just-for-fun fun history course, she opted to take a summer reach ahead course in Statistics. Last night, while doing dishes, she paused to poke her head into the livingroom and commented, "I spent half an hour today tutoring other students in math." Now, this girl had a really rough time in math last year, and spent a good part of that time saying things like, "I'm bad at math!" even though she was managing to bring home grades consistently over 80%. She felt like she was playing catch-up to people who were smarter/more talented than she was. Last year, she was the one being tutored by classmates, not the other way around. "So you're really getting the concepts?" "Actually we're doing a lot of the stuff you taught me back in Grade Four! Remember the numbers that go vroom in the Number Devil? Factorials, with an exclamation mark?" And I thought, wow! Not only does she remember our homeschool math lessons, but she's actually applying them some eight years down the road! That's the kind of thing that makes a mother feel really, really good.
