My daughter has been crying of stomach pains ever since she had the stomach flu. Finally after three doctor visits and now almost a month, they sent her for an x-ray. They said that it showed a calcification in her stomach. We are supposed to go to have an ultrasound done tomorrow but now she is sick with another virus (caught from a friend on Saturday) most likely the flu. Anyway, has anyone else ever been through anything like this with their child? Not feeling better after a sickness or a calcification of some sort?

My son had nodules in his lungs a couple years ago. They were little spores he had breathed in. The body encloses the foreign object and then causes it to calcify so that it does no harm to the rest of the body. At his last recheck, they could not be seen and were suspected to have become tiny little calcium pieces.

Did they think there was something similar with your dd? That the calcification was something the body had encapsulated? Not sure about how it works in the stomach, but it is a common thing for the body to do. Praying for her to feel peace as she waits. I know my ds was scared by the whole idea of something foreign in his body. (((hugs)))

The doctor is unsure what caused it and wants the ultrasound done to get a better look. She is little so she doesn't really know what is going on other than she doesn't feel good. I am mostly worried because it has been a month now of everyday pain after she eats or drinks and still no answers. I can't believe they haven't done a blood test on her yet. As soon as the ultrasound is done, I'm going to ask for one.

I am going through this right now with my 5 yo. They had me take him off milk for two weeks and that didn't help and now they have tested him for Celiac Diseae. But now he is complaining that his "tummy" hurts when he walks or yawns. We are at a loss.

ETA: Sorry, I know that doesn't help you.

I have a dd who complains of tummy aches all the time. We've even ended up in the ER when she was doubled over in pain. CT scans showed nothing, and I've never gotten a doc to think anything of it. One doc did tell me that pain during movement was "bad pain" and that because jumping up and down didn't make it worse, she was fine.

That ususally means something is wrong with your appendix, right?

I don't know. They thought it was her appendix in the ER, because of the location and tenderness, but the CT scan showed nothing.

The results of the ultrasound showed no calcification or mass. In fact they said everything looked totally normal. Yippie! I'm going to ask the doctor to do a blood test next. I want to wait before we do an upper GI or anything else invasive until absolutely necessary.

I just have to think that this is somehow connected to the stomach flu she had. It either did something to her stomach or now she is so freaked out about throwing up anytime her stomach feels different she thinks it hurts. Hmmmm

So glad there is nothing abnormal!!! Did you doctor mention to you that an ailment anywhere on a young child will often manifest as a tummy ache? I didn't realize that until an ER doc told me that once and after that I found it to be true most of the time. My dd11 still can give herself a tummy ache just worrying that she's going to get a tummy ache.  Again, soooooooooo glad things look good!

It's actually very common to be lactose intolerant for a while after a particularly bad virus. If she threw up a lot, and couldn't keep food down for days, she could have damaged villi in her stomach and intestine.

Do you notice certain foods make it worse? You might want to just cut out dairy for a week or two and allow the stomach to heal.

You could also give her the probiotic vitamins that are out now, they help rebalance the GOOD bacteria in the intestinal tract and stomach.

(((HUGS))) Sorry, i know it's frustrating when there's something wrong and you're not able to fix it!!!

My SIL was told to feed her daughter pro-biotic yogurt after a really bad stomach bug. She was having trouble getting over it and the doc thought the yogurt would balance out her system. It seemed to work.

Could be her system is a little out of wack from the bug, or she could be a little over sensitive to things b/c of all she went through.

It's so hard to know at this age. I feel for you guys!

You know girls, I think you may be on to something with the dairy. Cheese especially seems to be bothersome to her right now. But when I have been giving her probiotic yogurt she seems to do much better. :) Thank you so much, all of you, for you help and kind words. It truly is a HUGE help and comfort.
