So I take it fohawks are not allowed either? For cryin' out loud. I think if I were his classmates, I'd organize a hair dying session and see how they liked being overun with paperwork, parent phone calls and hiring extra workers to monitor the ISSs.

Maybe the haircuts are the real reasons so many high school campuses are not allowing military recruiters.

    Maybe I should give context:

This is the same town that refuses to allow a single fast food restaurant because it would make the town look bad (visually, literally look bad).

    They're a little.... odd.

First... I don't care about his hair. It's hair. Whatever. As long has HE looks like a HE and not a SHE, I don't care.

Second... I see the school's point. *IF* they honest-to-goodness have a policy about mohawks, he's in violation. The article didn't show him from behind, but in the first picture, you can tell he has a longer strip going down the back than on the sides. Clearly a mohawk wanna-be. Do I care? No. Just sayin' the school is probably right if the board voted and approved this rule beforehand.

Where I used to teach, they had two hair rules: You hair can be whatever color you want as long as it's natural to the human race (so, a black could have blond hair but not green), and no facial hair. If you show up with facial hair, you'll be given a disposible dry razor to shave in the presence of a school official (so you don't stash the razor for more sinister purposes). If you don't comply, you go home.

I thought both were stupid rules, but they were rules. We have a choice about where and how to educate our children. If we choose a place that has rules, we have to follow them. "Render to Caesar..." comes to mind.

Suspended because it's too short, but their solution is for him to shave other parts shorter... But if he'd shaved his entire head, that would have been okay??

The school does not have an policy about mohawks. They have an "excessive haircut" policy.

I was about to agree with you on the "fohawk" possibility based on the picture, but the news just showed the back of his head: it's a flat-top. Period.

I disagree about rendering to Caesar. I would agree if it as a private school, but when you're talking about public anything, we, the public (aka; the owners of the establishment) have a right to rebel against the way our property is being managed.

I know. I wondered the same thing. Like, how on earth is shaving the top shorter going to somehow make his hair less short. lol.

Stupid. His hair is fine and not "excessive" (That's a vague rule!). My daughter's hair grew like that when she was little. It was long in the middle and short on the sides. I didn't know she had a mohawk.

I loved the part where two days later they decided he had changed it, and now it was acceptable -- even though he didn't change anything except two days' growth!

I'm guessing, though it wasn't completely clear, that was when they got the letter from the lawyer ;)

I don't mind dress codes, but I can't stand vague rules. I'd rather have the very clear, yet seemingly obnoxious, "no more than a 1/2 below the ears" or whatever that school used to do. That's pretty clear. I heard of one school that had a book with images of acceptable male haircuts. I'm OK with that, too. Be clear or don't make a rule at all. Rules for girls are usually pretty clear (no tank tops, straps must be at least 1 inch, skirts must touch the finger tips, etc). Do the boys the same favor.

(Of course, I'd rather have no rules regarding hair, as those are just stupid, imo.)

Thats strange, my son has a mohawk ;) Actually, his whole football team does & it's green! LOL And he's still currently in public school. My daughter had a green streak last year, they never said a word. Although, green & gold are the school colors, maybe they saw it as school spirit ;)

LOL ;) Generally, the only thing they care about is the 'daisy dukes', the super short shorts & low cut shirts for the girls. Oh...and flip flops. Other than that though, hair has never been issue. And i don't make a big deal about their hair because if they're learning and behaving, then that's what counts. I suppose there are worse things than weird hair that they could be using as self-expression.

Looks like a military haircut to me. Very short and clean cut. I see no relation to a mohawk. One of the teachers at the local school has a high and tight so would he get suspended too. I am partial to a very short haircut on boys and men. I think this young man looks very nice.

Good grief! Who cares what your hair looks like? They need to worry more about what the kids are learning and not how their hair is.. Besides, I thought his hair looked nice and neat.
