I'm really glad I found this thread. I have been considering this for quite some time. Carrying around all those books in my RV takes up quite a bit of storage that could certainly be used for something else.

Does SoS come with teacher's manuals and such?

We're only using SOS Science. It didn't have any TM. I got the SOS Install disk and the science disks (1 disk for 3rd grade, 3 disks for 5th grade).

It was easy to install the 2007 version. Took a bit of time to setup everything how I wanted it (if you use defaults, it would be quicker). You can see in the teacher section the lesson book by student, etc.

So far, so good....only had it a few months now.

okayt the TM is in the program rmcollins, you have to set up the thing just like you do for the lessons only you do it from the TM.
YOu don't grade it it does it for you, thats the teacher part.
It keeps record of when your child did the work, and if I remember right how long they spend working on it!

Thanks ladies, I think I get it. My next question is how would this work out for those who need to keep portfolios. I do not have to, but what if you need actual copies of things?

Also, does it give anything like progress reports?
Does it store all the grades somewhere, or do you have to do that?

I currently record their grades in a grade book and have to do annual progress reports for each child.

Just trying to figure it all out. Thanks everyone.

You can print things up, infact we printed our report card each quarter last year for ds so he had one when dsolder had one!
You can print anything off the lessons or tests or quizes, they are same as life paks or self tests btw.
I will be going back to some of the SOS lessons for next year with ds10, but not all cause he needs to not be on computer all the time or he gets writers cramp... the boy loves typing though and loves creating things on computer that is why I have to keep it minimum. I think its better if you use some of sos and something that is not so they get to use different find motor skills.. flangies need to move different ways! HA!
I love biology _-- oo did I say that? LOL!

I am a teacher in our kids Christian school. We bought all the 2006 version SOS for every grade. There was at the sos website, a teacher helps section, especially for the older grades, like teh exact LONG ways to work out math problems, and science problems, etc. So if the student did not understand, you can show them easily the exact long way to figure it out.

My computer crashed, and I LOST all those pdf's that I had downloaded. I am hoping someone will have those - and can email those to me, or tell me where I can download them again.

    Thanks so much!

I am sorry but I am not sure what you are talking about? Can you not just go to AOP to the now time help msg board there? They have assistant that can answer your questions right there.

Has anyone tried the Spanish electives from SOS? I am thinking of getting that for my son because he has to have a language for high school, but he's not super interested in really speaking another language, and Rosetta Stone is out of my budget.

I guess I am the odd one out but we hated SOS. I think they could have done a lot better with it. I finally gave up on it this year and wont be buying it again.

One of the things that really irritated me was the day he had a spelling test, I tried to go back so he could review the words again and it would not even let us. So basically he saw the words once during one of the lessons and never again till the test. I dont know if I was doing something wrong or what, but it seemed to be much more of a headache than it was worth. I would rather have a book so if I want to review, I can flip back a page or two and review it.

Another thing I hated is I did not know when or what was going to happen next. The spelling test just popped up one day, I had no clue when it would be so there was no real way to do any planning. IMHO its not user friendly either, I just thought it really stunk all the way around.

We are going to use to switch to Abeka for grammar very soon and use the free stuff I downloaded from SF until we switch. We are not going to use SOS anymore. I am going to chalk it up to a bad purchace. I am just very glad I did not buy it for lots of subjects like I had thought about doing.

we are using the Secondary Spanish right now,
I was going to allow ds to start it but not going to he is in 6th, but my other hs child is using it for high school credit. She is enjoying it. We had to set it up for speaking Spanish tough, and she has to remember and switch it back hahah!
