We are going to be moving to Tennessee this summer- Memphis area. My husband and I work for the same company, and they will be moving us. This is our third out of state move in as many years. We are originally from Louisiana. We moved to Arkansas almost two years ago, and now we are moving again. This will not be our last move, but we should be there a year or two.

I have been looking up the homeschool laws for Tennessee. It seems the laws have gotten consecutively more confusing as we move each time. We are going to continue to homeschool ourselves and not go under an umbrella school. Can anyone give me any input on their experiences with the different "types" of homeschooling in Tennessee? Thank you :)

My two sons are grade 4 and 6 this year, and we have been homeschooling them their entire education.

I'm originally from the Memphis area (but have lived in TX and now MS-not our last move either!!). When we homeschooled in TN most people I knew chose one of the Church-related schools options (Option IV). Basically, you pick an umbrella school to report to rather than the state. Most people in West TN use either Homelife Academy (This is who I used.) or Gateway. You will most likely have to report attendance and grades to the CRS. If you chose to homeschool independently, you must file a letter of intent and vaccination records with the local school board, turn in attendance reports each year, and administer standardized tests in grades 5, 7, and 9. Check out HSLDA for the legal definitions.

The Memphis area has several very active homeschool groups and classes available. If you want to PM me a more specific location, I might be able to give you more detailed information.
