Since next week will be a short school week for us, I am planning to take a break form MFW and do a mini Thanksgiving unit. We haven't done this in a few years, and I'm having trouble finding good resources for 4th and 7th grades (tons out there for the younger ones!!). What are your favorite, historically accurate (and free) resources?
We have been having the same problem finding free resources. I've seen TONS of stuff being posted on Pinterest, but when I check it out, it is all for younger kids. Currclick has some stuff for Thanksgiving if you use that site. I just typed in Thanksgiving, sorted by age, and then sorted by price. Still not a ton for free, but they do give age ranges for their stuff. Here are the ones I downloaded for free: http://www.currclick.com/product/65645/Thanksgiving-ebook http://www.currclick.com/product/25938/Thanksgiving-Notebooking-Pages?it=1 http://www.currclick.com/product/65904/Thanksgiving-Freebie-Cornucopia http://www.currclick.com/product/75549/Thanksgiving-Activity-Mini-Lapbook And I paid $1.00 for this one, which I really liked, but it is more about being thankful than it is about the history of Thanksgiving. http://www.currclick.com/product/65440/Count-Your-Blessings-Thanksgiving-Lapbook You could always check out a couple books from the library and then do the notebooking pages.
I plan to get some books. Our library stinks, but surely I can find something on Thanksgiving! I searched Pinterest, too but like you, found things were mostly for younger kids. I'll share what I find with you!
Here are a few things that I've found: Reading Comprehension (upper elem) Science -Food Groups (elem/upper elem) Movie (History Channel) Interactive Site This may be on the younger side. Art (middle elem) Bible (copywork/dictation) Trivia Various worksheets (sorted by grade)
We are using Trail Guide to Learning Paths of Exploration as our curriculum this year and are just finishing a unit on the Pilgrims so I haven't been looking for resources online, but did stumble upon this http://strangersandpilgrimsonearth.blogspot.com/2011/11/presenting-pilgrims.html. Our main book this unit has been the Stories of the Pilgrims that is available to read free online with a link in that post. Today we are going to be creating acrostic poems for the word THANKFUL. I am looking forward to what my kids come up with for that.
This might be a little young, but it is a bit more involved than most of the turkey crafts I have seen. I like the idea of adding things they are thankful for. http://www.hsclassroom.net/thankful...=buffer&utm_medium=google&utm_campaign=Buffer Here's the original pattern.http://www.hsclassroom.net/3d-turkey-cutout/
Here's a Squanto lapbook that could be modified for older students. When I get my toner in the mail, we'll be printing this one. Hopefully it will get here before Thanksgiving. http://cyncesplace.com/squanto-lapbook.html
here's a few more ideas that I just saw via Facebook this morning. http://www.theunlikelyhomeschool.com/2013/11/thanksgiving-unit-study-intentionally.html
Not about the first Thanksgiving, but a little bit more about how it became an annual holiday. I had heard of Sarah Hale before, but learned a bit more reading this. http://hedua.com/blog/homeschool-mother-thanksgiving/
