What are your thoughts on the big Carnival Cruise shipwreck? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-...d-house-arrest-as-death-toll-rises-to-11.html On another board I frequent, people were arguing about the issue of how the women and children were basically being trampled as able-bodied men [apparently including crew] pushed past them to the lifeboats. Some were arguing for the rule of 'women and children first' while others said that if women wanted equality, this is part of the ramifications of it. Of course, I don't see how that would change how the children were treated but to each his own, I suppose. I think it's safe to say that there is one area where most people, regardless of religion or politics, tend to agree: the captain showed a tremendous amount of cowardice. Clearly, this was not a position he was even remotely well-suited for.
I asked my mom what she thought, for she is leaving on a Carnival Cruise this weekend, she feels its was hugely the fault of the Captian, and he is in Jail....
I honestly can't believe his claim is that he 'tripped and fell' into the lifeboat and that's why he got away before everyone else. Good grief.
Yes he is under house arrested now. He shouldn't be but thats not for me to judge. He should of went back on the ship if he tripped and help all the people off. About who should go first men, women or children. I think they should of had enough lifeboats to fit everyone there wouldn't be a problem. So sad.
Seriously?? I hadnt heard that one. Well, goes to show that not only did he lack captain qualities, he also suffers from a tragic lack of imagination!
It's so sad. Even if he tripped and fell, the coast guard came out with the tape telling him to go back to the ship and he basically said "no way." I've heard a few heroic stories...he could have been one of them...but he was a coward. We'll all have forgotten this story in a few years, but the poor families of the victims will live with it forever. I was thinking about this and I'm not sure how fast it all happened, but I wondered, since the ship was tilting so much were they able to get all of the life boats down? When it started to tip, the life boats hanging on the "up" side would have been hard to get into the water because they would be hindered by the side of the ship as they were lowered. The "down" side eventually ended up underwater, how fast did that happen? Was there time to get them down and out of the way of the tilting ship? I was actually thinking about this while we were doing our lifeboat drill on a cruise just a few weeks ago. As I was standing there under our "assigned" lifeboat, I wondered what the chances were of everyone getting to the right "station" in a real crisis. It's hard enough when everyone is awake, sober, and knows it's coming. (There were alot more scenarios that ran through my mind - but you get the idea.) Then I thought, I'm not going to worry about it, if Jesus decides to call me while I'm on a cruise...I'm gone...
I think I heard that they waited too long to release the lifeboats, and as a result some weren't able to be released for that very reason, Jill.
