We are doing LOGIC this summer, reading through the Fallacy Detective. Well, right now, my bil is staying with us. He and his wife are separated, and he's working on them getting back together. One thing he has is a Netflix account, which he's trying to get working here. So Phillip was telling me how we "needed" Netflix. He gave me a reason why we should have it, and then grinned at me and said, "That was a Red Herring, btw!" I looked at him weird, and he explained, "That argument I just used was a red herring. It really didn't have anything to do with whether or not we should get Netflix, but it sounded good!" LOL!!! So he's actually learning!!!
I really liked the book A Case of Red Herrings (I think it was called). It told a very short situation, and they had to ask questions to get to the truth of it. For example, one was about a woman who put on "a heavy coat" and then went out side, even though it was very warm out. Turned out, she was painting her house and it was a paint of coat on the wall. But Phillip was only a Kindergartener. He wanted to know if the lady was a firefighter.... I thought it an excellent question for his age (though we have a friend who is a volunteer fireman. We've been to parties at his place when all of a sudden half the people take off, so he was use to that!) Anyway, we found them very good to do while traveling. I could read them while Carl drove, and he could try to figure them out, too.
