I was wondering if anyone would want to give their thoughts on MTW? I have read a few of the previous threads on the subject and did get some good info off those. In recap, last year we used an online charter school and liked some things about it, some things, not so much. So this year, (resembling a deer in the headlights), I decided to take the plunge into an eclectic routine and leave the online school. We never had the freedom last year to do anything we wanted to do, or time to explore, or take things the boy's wanted to do and run with it. Ok, so this year so far we are using Christian Light Education Math and English/grammer (I purchased individual units to see if it worked for us- a very nice aspect of that curriculum), Science we are going to do some unit studies on our own & I purchased a McWiz Kids Science experiment kit & book from a friend- and also might try Apologia, History we are still up in the air- the same friend is letting us borrow Story of the World. For spelling we are using Sequential Spelling. I need very hands on for our middle son, I think I am bringing him back from a hate of reading that the public school instilled in him, it has been a long road for that and last year didn't help things all that much in that department. I also have a son in K. Is this much different than what we would get with MFW? I read you have to add in the math and spelling- which we are already doing. I also read it has a biblical world view throughout the teaching- I am fine with that. And I read it is very hands on and mapped out well for day by day. Anyone agree or disagree? Or what you love or dislike about it? Thanks! Sher
We are using MFW Rome to Reformation this year. So far, it's working well for us. The lessons are very clear and easy to follow and it's very hands on. My boys love it and I love the resources. You do have to add LA, math and spelling. Hope this helps. Blessings - Carla
We're doing MFW Creation to the Greeks, and so far we love it, too! I have a 3rd grader and a Kindergartner, so I'm having to stretch some of the material to make it engaging for the little one, but it's very flexible, so the stretching isn't hard.
Never used it, but it's on my ultimate "if i could afford it" wish list, especially in the younger grades.
I am teaching out of the 2nd grade curriculum this year and there are parts I really like and some I don't. The fact that I had to get a Math and LA curriculum separate, made me look twice. But the repetition helps a lot. I love their phonics!!! With a new K, this year, I will be using it a lot. The focus on US History now has been a week long adventure. My son is 7yo and loves it!
Thank you Groovy. So I understand it is basically the history/geography/science curriculum, right? And you add in the other subjects.
In his 2nd grade, yes + Bible and Music and Art. In 1st grade it was Bible and phonics, I added Math and we did very little Science and SS. I try to cover that in our everyday lives. MFW is easy to teach. It is step by step. A friend of mine used it last year and couldn't believe how I added and moved subjects around. I did that for the progress of my son though.
We used it for K and I liked it. My son enjoyed the hands on stuff, the foam letters for manipulation, the butterfly garden, the ant hill, and even the worksheets. It was worth the money in my opinion, but I don't care for "lesson plans" so I never got it again.
