I still have a year to actually "test" my oldest, but wanted to know how and where I go about doing the testing required...also, when I was going over the packet, I saw that they require an assesment to be done yearly-what do you include in that? I test my girls, but don't keep track, because when they complete it and there is something done incorrectly, I point it out and either have them fix it or review it until they get it right. I also see that we are required to homeschool 12 months of the year-I was planning to take June and July off-should I just mark off a few days each month to appease them?

    Thanks :)

1st you are not required to homeschool 12 months out of the year-your school year is a 12 month period and in that period you must school 180 days (4.5 hours=a day). So you have 365 days in your school year but only have to do school 180 of those 365 days....You can take June and July off if you get your 180 days done August-May.

There is also no yearly assessment by anyone if you homeschool in GA. You do have to write a yearly progress report for the state required subjects (reading, language arts, math, social studies, and science) and keep that on file for 3 years (your own file-you don't have to turn it in to anyone) Most homeschoolers I know simply write 1-2 paragraphs about what their child learned in the subject area.

The only thing you have to turn in is a yearly DoI and monthly attendance.

Here is a list from GHEA of test suppliers you can look at. And you don't turn the test into anyone either-just keep them on file for 3 years.

You can order many test online and test at home-send the test back and they will mail you the results.

You can find the GA homeschooling laws here http://hslda.org/laws/analysis/Georgia.pdf

    Thanks Sonita!
    I guess I misunderstood the 12-month thing...oops!
I didn't realize we don't have to send the test in to anyone-good to know.

Thanks for clarification-this is the best forum ever!

No problem-nope, homeschoolers in GA don't have to send in anything other than the DoI and attendance. And the law also says

So, if your local county asks for any proof of anything-don't just hand it over-if you are ever unsure contact HSLDA and ask them.

Also-have you seen this website? https://www.homeschoolcompliance.com It's $12/year and they send you an email reminder each month, you click it and it takes you to the site and you file your monthly attendance report online. Then they send you another email once the person in your county opens it. With the price of paper, printer ink, envelope and postage that offers a me a receipt of my county getting the report-the $12 a year a way cheaper, plus it's easier and I don't forget because they remind me! The website is run by a homeschool family in Clarke Co.
