Has anyone's toddlers had a uti? My 30 month old had one and now the doctor wants to run tests to make sure that there are no developmental problems. I tried to tell him that I have had problems with uti's all my life and that my dd was still in diapers but he wouldn't listen (he is not the doctor we usually see). What did your doctor do? Did they run tests or just wait and see if your toddler got another one?

I have never had a doctor want to run tests for a UTI. I would think that if the UTI's were chronic and wouldn't go away then maybe some tests would need to be run, but if this is the first UTI I wouldn't have my child tested I would just take something to get rid of it. Of course I am all for more natural methods, and then if those don't work, antibiotics or whatever the dr. prescribes.

I second what Minthia said. Infections happen from time to time and shouldn't be too big of a concern until they become a real concern (kwim?).

One isn't too big a deal.
Two means you should start thinking about a possible source (without the doc's help, imo).
Three means let the doc take some action.

As long as the UTI responds well to medication or natural remedies, I'd tell this doc you're going to wait to get a second opinion from your usual doctor.

I'm with Amie on this one but then again I try to avoid doctors as much as possible and look for natural solutions. I personally wouldn't allow him to do the testing.

I would also talk it over with your regular doctor too, jusdt to see what they say and tell them your thoughts.

My dd seemed to have multiple UTIs starting as a toddler. Every time she had a urine test, it would come up with the signs of infection. Once we started seeing a specialist, we found that after culturing the urine, she didin't actually have an infection and there was nothing to worry about. He also ordered an ultrasound to rule out any UT performance issues. She does have a sleeping disorder of sorts that causes her to wet at night (sleeps too well), but other than that, her suspected UTIs turned out to be nothing.

You don't mention the type of test the doctor wants to run. If it is just culturing the urine, it will give an accurate diagnosis for the suspected infection. All other tests were not even brought up until she had several suspected UTIs.

Why are you seeing this doctor instead of the regular one? Will you be going back to the regular one? If so, tell the doctor thank you, but you'd like to see what your regular doctor has to say about it.

Let the doctor run the tests.
There could be problems with emptying the bladder, there could be reflux. I wouldn't play with this, cause you could end up creating problems if you don't get it taken care of early.

Personally, my urologist said I have a flaccid ureter. I take medicine to put a little 'oomph' behind my flow, lol. I was urinating, but still holding up to 7 ounces of urine in my bladder! I had utis, too, and it took 4 years to get this diagnosis. That's why I say jump on that testing and get it taken care of.

well I agree with all the ladies, go back to your doctor and ask him first.
How many UTI's has the baby had? If its the first I wouldn't worry to much.
Like Becky said do it. So, I would contact my regular doctor and see what he says, if this is more then one then I would have the test.

Does the baby get alot of fluids? Up the fluids.

Yes, this was her first UTI. We only saw the other doctor because she was seen during the office's emergency hours. I did what you guys suggested and gave her regular doctor a call. He said that it was fine to wait until she got another one before the tests and that is usually what people choose to do. She is doing great now. We gave her the antibiotics and started potty training. She feels so much better. Thanks so much for the help!!!!

I personally had LOTS of UTIs as a toddler and had all the testing. My oldest daughter had similar testing as an infant to make sure her kidneys weren't refluxing urine/bacteria.

UTIs can turn serious if they get into the kidneys. My daughter was SUPER sick from ecoli urisepsis.....bacteria that got into her blood stream from her urinary tract. Not something to mess around with.

If you trust your doctor (and why would you go to him/her if you didn't), I consider the testing they prescribe if she has another one for sure.
